What does this quote mean to you Im writing an essay for a play?

“Do not pursue pleasure for thou mayest have the misfortune to overtake it”

I’ve got the basic gist of it, however my essay is not long enough. Also what does the last part of it mean? mayest have the misfortune to overtake it?

I just need more ideas and explanations.

Answer #1

I believe it is saying that if you want something too much, you will be displeased with it once you do get it.

Answer #2

I think it’s a warning to hedonists, with elements of ‘be careful what you wish for.’
