What does this mean for my uncle?

I just found out the other day that my uncle was quite ill in hospital, slipping in and out of a coma due to his liver being wrecked. He’s beyond the stage of a liver transplant, but he’s gotten better over the past couple of days, sitting up, talking and eating, due to the medicine he’s been given. My mum says it’s only a matter of time before he gets worse and goes, but what I want to know is what this means for my uncle- will he be able to go home? What is likely to set him off on the downward slope? How long will his liver hold out on this medication? How long will his body cope with his liver functioning at the bare minimum? How much time does he realisically have before he does get worse- are we talking days, weeks, months, years?

A lot of questions, I know, but I just have no idea what to expect.

Sorry to hear about your uncle. I hope you’r mum is holding up ok (I assume this is her brother?).

These are questions best asked to his doctor. If his liver failure has been caused by alcohol, and if he stops drinking 100% (not even another sip), sometimes the liver will eventually heal itself enough to function a little depending on the degree of damage(you can live with a partially functioning liver if you take great care of what you consume).

You can live with a minimally functioning liver, as long as you consume nothing that stresses it. He needs to talk to his doctor about a minimally stressful diet - assuming he’s ever released from the hospital.
