What does Alcohol do when combined with Klonopin and Celexa?

I realize that its inadvisable to drink while you’re taking anxiety drugs but what could it actually do to me?

I just got prescribed to Klonopin, Ativan and Celexa after buying $250 wine for the Thanksgiving party that I’m hosting . I don’t want to miss out on that.

Everyone is telling me that I shouldn’t drink. No one can tell me what will happen if I do. What is the worst it could do to me? I’m not a big drinker. I’d be surprised if it went beyond one glass and I have a very high alcohol tolerance. I’m fucking irritated that I might not be able to drink at the party!

Answer #1

Klonopin is a benzodiazepine and Celexa is an antidepressnat called an SSRI.

The benzodiazepines work on the GABA receptor in the brain to make you relax. Alcohol works on the exact same receptor. Thus, drinking while taking this drug is akin to taking an overdose, depending of course upon the amoung of each ingested. The danger of this combination is that it could lead to drowsiness, supression of the centres that control your breathing, coma or even death.

So please don’t drink alcohol while taking these drugs.

Answer #2

If I were to go a day without taking the Klonopin would I be ok to drink and would alcohol have the same effect in preventing panic attacks? I feel truly handicapped right now. I cannot live with this “no caffiene, no alcohol, beware of PTSD “triggers,” etc. I absolutely cannot live like this.

Answer #3

Firstly it could make the drugs ineffective and secondly you’ll probably end up being high and extremely drunk on just one or two glasses because of the medication you are talking.

I’m also going to tell you not to drink while on anti-anxiety drugs. My brother is on similar medication and cannot handle alcohol at all and goes into deep depressions after even a night of light drinking.
