What do you think? Are people getting dumber?

Okay. So I haven’t posted a question in a while but here is something I have always wondered. Do you think the human race is getting dumber? Because when I think about it, in my parents day they didn’t have calculators and solved complex mathematical, as well as nuemerous other problems in their head. Whereas now we have calculators and other such technology which provide us with the answers to such questions. So now I’ve explained that, my question is: Do you think that people are getting dumber because of technology or do you think that this is balanced out by the answers that the technology provides? Any answer would be appreciated. And sorry about the lengnth.

I agree on the lazy factor.

but I do also think that people are starting to think in a different direction.

the skill of doing mathematical equations/problems in ones head is no longer needed in these technological times, but different skills that were not needed 100 years ago are now becoming huge factors of life. we are using equipment (cars, planes, helicopters, weapons etc) that didnt exist a while ago, and the world is constantly inventing new things. huge, life changing things.

so over all, no I dont think we are becoming dummer. I think we are being raised in an over-privileged world and are not functioning to our full potential.

I think our potentials grow daily, and the new generation is not being nurtured enough. their role models and belief systems allow them to feel okay about violence and laugh at other people’s suffering. I think this is dumb. but it has only happened because people dont raise children as they did 100 years ago.

im 16 and I am appalled at how lazy other people my age are. if this is my generation, im worried for the future!

im 17 and honestly… im lazy as fuck. I mean I work out swim lifeguard and read a lot just to get my head straight with historical mathematical and scientific facts includin technology. im disgusted with how so many kids my age in my grade (junior) are so lazy to not even read a damn book to find the answers and just wait to copy or listen for the teacher to tell the answer. and with the phones nowadays there not even a phone there more games and computers than one. a phone is used to call a person to hear their voice and actually talk back and forth instead of textin a few words for hours. its irrelevent. education has dumbed down in many ways and my school has even thought of lowering grade level expectations to graduate more kids and also thught of dropping many ap and honors classes because so many other students who take them dont get it… but thats because were lazy enough to not study and procrastinate than fight the teacher bout how the work is “too hard” yet its fuckin HONORS im honostly thinking mine and the next generation are going to destroy this world with dumbness

Answer #3

must agree on being lazy. I think our intellectual capacity is still the same but the skill of training our minds to work/solve/read a lot is kind of compromised because we are relying too much on computers, calculators, etc.. but this isnt necessarily a bad thing because that’s their purpose anyways. however, this does not mean that we shouldn’t learn it the hard way. :)

advantage of knowing the manual stuff is that we tend to really understand how its derived unlike when we use a calculator where its like automatic already right? I think I appreciate the learning more when I learn it manually first and then move on to how it can be done with the help of technology.

what I admire most about the people before is that they make their term papers/theses by typewriter or like handwritten. and really go to the library and read the big-a$$ books there for reference. now, its just the internet. I mean wow they still can submit on time.

Wow. :D Stoked with these responses guys :D keep them coming

Answer #5

Yeah the Lazy thing is true. I’m actually using a speech recognition feature on my computer to write this because I am too lazy to type it. I hope they come out with something that uses brain waves soon because I am getting tired from talking to my computer. It wears my jaws out.

Answer #6

my mom was born in 1956 and she had access to a calculator by the time she was at school…

people arent getting stupid because of technology… their just getting lazy..

kids now-a-days just dont know what theyve got, or they know full well what they have got and use it to their advantage so as I said up there, their brains are just getting lazy.

Answer #7

I would say that people have always generally been dumb. Even if people have been better educated in the past, they still are unable to think critically. What you say about being able to do stuff without calculators isn’t really any evidence of getting dumber. Education is just different these days, there’s less focus on the fundamentals, and it’s become more specialised. I also agree with what the other people have said, technology is probably having quite a profound affect on us in others ways, I’m sure that our attention span is a lot shorter. We are constantly bombarded with information everywhere, we have become so used to filtering it out, that we probably too readily filter out information that we ought to know.
