What do people in general think about a diplomat's life?

I was just wondering because I come from a long line of diplomats in my family. It is almost like a family career.I have my own views about a diplomat’s life because well I grew up with them. But out of curiousity, how would you view a diplomat? Please enlighten me!

Answer #1

A diplomat is seen by most people as a person with power, authority and living a glamorous life. It is seen by others as a person from a foreign country who send home information about the local situation, it is respected and suspected at the same time, has privileges in front of local autorities and justice and in some cases believes to much in his/her own importance.

From inside, it is quite different, it is a life with a few privileges at the cost of great stress, looking over the shoulder at all times, need to negotiate constantly, sacrifice the family life very often, need to take some decissions against personal beliefs with the benefit of feeling that you are doing something that makes a difference, and you can even be respected if your actions show intelligence and good judgement
