What can make a foot tattoo fade?

I just got a peace sign on my foot about 8 days ago. It itches every so often but I only scratch around it, not on it. I put on the A&D ointment that the tattoo artist gave me for about 3 or 4 days, then I finally bought some Lubriderm Seriously Sensative Lotion, which I’ve been putting on the tattoo about twice a day. Being as it is so cold outside, plus I am in college, I have to wear shoes and can’t wear flip flops. I usually wear slip-ons and I have been wearing socks most of the time, all the time when I’m wearing shoes, and I’m worried about it rubbing the tattoo. It’s peeling a little, and I’m a little nervous because one section looks a little faded. Is that for good or would I have to get it redone? And what can I do to keep it from fading?

First off, you should be using the AD ointment for about 10-14 days. It’s supposed to be used until the tattoo is done peeling, then you switch to a white non-fragrance lotion. You should be putting it on 3-4times daily, at least.

Well flip flops would be bad, tattoo’s aren’t supposed to get sun exposure for at least 2 weeks because that will cause them to fade. Even when it is exposed to sun when fully healed you should have at least SPF 30 sunblock on it to prevent fading.

Rubbing can cause some problems, cause it can cause any scabs or peeling to come off early. Which isn’t good for the healing process and may ruin then end result. But if you apply ointment enough it should be fine, and you should be taking your shoes and socks off whenever possible. It needs air to heal best. =]

It’s peeling so that’s a layer of dead skin coming off. The tattoo is going to look lighter then when you first got it that’s a given. But if it’s like a medium gray then that might have been some damage but that’s okay, because you can just get it touched up. But you won’t really know if a part has faded for sure until it is completely healed.

Fading prevention:

Min of SPF 30 in Sunlight Don’t soak the tattoo while it’s healing (no baths, pools, hot tubs, spas, etc…) Don’t pick at scabs, & don’t let scabs get too thick while healing (creates scar tissue) Your tattoo artist might not have went deep enough (causes immediate fading)

*Note:

Small tattoo’s are more likely to fade, Also tattoo’s on hands and feet are more likely to fade as well due to blood circulation.

ETC… there’s more I just don’t feel like typing it, funmail me if you really wanna know. But I covered all the basics. =] good luck!

Personally I have 4 tattoos, and I had one fade within the first couple weeks, but you should discuss with your tattoo artist that he/she will be willing to do a touch up, becuause I mean fading does happen sometimes and they should just fix it up for free… wont hurt to ask them.
