What are some good tips for learning to play guitar?

Well I bought a fender starcaster a couple weeks ago and I am not making a whole lot of progress learning anything… I know it takes years to get good some times but I was just wondering if there were some exercises to make my fingers work… Can anyone help?

theres lots of different exerscises to practice going faster one is, using the first 4 fingers put your finger on any fret on the top stringthen use the 3 other fingers to do the same to on the frets next to it then go down the strings doing the same things when you get to the bottom do the same thing back up, only backwards! and try to practice going faster it does take lots of practivce though to get good google will help you find many easy riffs to start with and try to practice for at least 10 minutes a day

GET A TEACHER! Seriously, this IS the best way to learn. the online stuff tends to be confusing and a teacher can help you with things that the internet cant (like correct tuning, hand position etc)

I think you should start learning your chords first and practice chord changing (this will build the initial finger strength and speed that you require). Just practice with your chords if you’re more into playing rhythm guitar. However, if you’re more into lead gutiar, learn a lot of scales and practice them a lot (this can also help for solo-improvisation). But the best thing to do would be to just learn songs…and of some variety as well, learn some songs with quick riffs like “Snow (Hey oh)” and then some more peaceful ones like some Jack Johnson.

Also, DO NOT start with an electric guitar. They ARE easier to play, but you learn less with them. Acoustic guitars will really boost your finger strength. And one more thing, to add more finger strength, play some songs with legato (only using your fretting hand…no picking).
