What age will I be able to notice and control my ADD?

I am 13 and I have ADHD and ADD and very bad anger problems. So I get angry really often then I either swear or punch someone. So if someone makes me mad they better say sorry fast for they are in trouble so, What age will I be able to notice that I need to control that?

I hope you dont actually believe that having ADHD is an excuse for anger management problems? Because it’s not. You may be more easily emotionally aroused, you may have poorer impulse control, but it still isnt an excuse. It is also not something that you will grow out of. Yes, the impulse control and emotional regulation usually gets better with maturity, but not always. You want to work on it, now, before you find yourself into serious trouble.

Good for you for noticing that you need to control yourself. It will get easier with time and as you get older you will be more inclined to go about your actions in different ways.

In the mean time, a good anger technique is the rubber band technique. What you do, is wear a rubber band or a hairtie or something around your wrist, then when something makes you mad, just ping it on your wrist so you get a small shock/pain. It will wake your mind up from the situation and inflict a small amount of pain towards yourself. Over time, your brain decides that feeling angry hurts you, so it will let less anger flow through your body and you will be more self controlled.

You’ve already noticed that you need to control it – otherwise, you wouldn’t even have asked this question.

Now, to control it.

The first step is to keep your hands to yourself. Punching people who upset you is immature and will get you in a LOT of trouble once you turn 18. I suggest therapy and / or medications to get your anger and ADD under control. With a combination of therapy (psychologist) and medicine (psychiatrist), you will be able to control it – but only if you take these steps and want to better yourself.

Good luck.
