Is it true that girls shouldn't dye their hair until they hit puberty?

When I was like 11 my mom took me to the hair salon to get blonde streaks & the lady said she refuses to do that to my hair because I never had my period at the time, & that it would screw up my hormones. O_o

Answer #1

I can’t see what difference it would make. your hair moves on a scale alot broader than that of puberty. although starting early (lol, dying yer hair i mean) might have some negative side effects.

Answer #2

I think its BS. people also say you shouldnt dye/bleach you hair while your on your period.. like wtf. loool

Answer #3

That lady needs a good slap up the side of the head. Dyeing your hair doesn’t interfere with anything to do with your female organs. The only reason I can think of for people not dyeing a child’s hair is because they don’t think it’s right, like putting eyeliner and mascara on a 5 year old.

Answer #4

Some hair colors do have some ingredients that are chemically similar to hormones. But then, so do almost all plastics that are available anywhere at all. The flexibilizers can disturb your hormones, too. But the stuff is still sold. Even in toys. You should not eat hair color and you should not take colored hair in your mouth. But that should be obvious. Even to a 11-year old.

I don’t think that that will do any damage to your hormones at all. So I guess the lady has heard a rumor about a rumor and totally exaggerated.

Answer #5

I heard that something special happens to your hair when you’re 16, like it gets stronger or something O_o but that’s all I know about that.

Answer #6

My sister was 14 when my mom let her get streaks in her hair from my other sister’s left over bottle. They came out fine. There are other factors that I have found come thru that may interfere with the dye, but pre puberty is not one of them.

And no, it cannot harm your hormones or anything like that.

Answer #7

No …

Answer #8

Pfffft no way, it has nothing to do with it. The hair on your head is DEAD, it is not alive on you. The only alive bit is the bulb inside your scalp. Some cultures or religions don’t colour/bleach hair until puberty and also don’t let pregnant women have their hair cut/coloured etc so maybe that woman was part of a certain culture? But anyway, I’m a hairdresser and I can tell you honestly it was nothing to do with anything!
