Traveling to Nepal, is it not a good idea?

I heard that Nepal has been in the middle of a cival war for a while now, ever since the previous king & most of the royal family was slain amid suspicious circumstances (the only surviving royal was at the dinner where it happened, but never accused). Traveling to Nepal, is it not a good idea, since they are in the middle of this war, or is it still safe there?

Nepal is a great place to visit. From a few friends I talked to, there is a civil war, but if you stay in the city of Kathmandu, for example, you should be OK. There are military checkpoints and if you look like a foreigner, they just wave you onwards.

From pics I’ve seen, it’s an amazing place. They also have the oldest known bhuddist museum in the world there in Old Kathmandu, which has some fascinating relics.

If you do go, enjoy your trip.

March 2009 update: The civil war is long since over, peace treaty signed, new parliament elected, etc.

Many problems remain - rebuilding a country after ten years of warfare is never easy - but Nepal is, and in fact has always been, a safe place to visit. Even during the worst of the civil war, tourists were specifically NOT targeted by either side. (It was different for me, because I was living and working as a Nepali among Nepalis in the war-torn areas.)

So, if anyone reads this now: do make that visit to Nepal - you will never regret it!

Tourism is vital to the economy of this very poor country, and you will be made to feel truly welcome. And.. you don’t have to trek to Everest Base Camp to experience the magnificent Himalayas.
