TOEFL Writing & speaking!!!
ok so I was practicing for my TOEFL exam next saturday and I wrote this essay in response to a lecture and passage about the system for classifying students according to chronologicl age in schools and how students have to repeat grades if they fail and how this system is very bad. Here it is: The professor casts many doubts on the system of school orginization which the United States has copied from Europe. Firstly, in the passage it states that at the age of six most students begin school. The professor says that this is wrong, on account of some six year olds are not mentally, physically, socially or psychologically ready to enter school while some are perfectly ready at the age of five or even four. This makes problems for the students in class because while some are perfectly ready to learn and study the others are not catching up with the material because they are not ready. Secondly, the profesor states that students in intermediate and secondary school are teenagers who develope differently. An obvious fact is that boys’ and girls’ maturity rates differ at these ages. Girls tend to mature physically and socially faster than boys. Just because some students are slower at learning that doesn’t mean that they have to repeat an entire year because of one subject they have not met the minimum requirements for. This is an issue of promotion. This system causes many dropouts because of the boredom that the stuents have for repeating an entire year of the same subject just for one subject that they weren’t doing well in. Lastly, some students in a class may learn slower than others. This causes them the need to repeat the class or maybe even the entire year while they only need to repeat the materials that they have not understood. On the other hand, some students are faster at learning which in turn causes them to have to wait for the new learning materials. This is not fair for both the sides because of the difference in learning rates. Thus, in conclusion, I would say that the professor haas the right for casting doubts on the system because it has many flaws and needs to be revised by the ministeries of education.
good grammar, vocab, and word usage? and if you have any speaking topics please tell me them!!! I suck at speaking for 45 seconds!!
Greetings Noora14!
I understand the importance of your TOEFL and I agree with you on speaking for 45 minutes, especially in a language that is not your own! =o)
I do not know what the criteria is for your speaking portion of the test, but assuming it is like a speech I will offer some suggestions.
- Attention getter. How about something like:
*Is the current system used in the United States school systems truly beneficial to its students?…or turn it into a statement instead of a question.
- In your opening introduce the Professor by name, his credentials, and the lecture event, date, etc. so that your audience has a point of reference. Remember, the audience was not there. Example:
- Dr. Ima Sosmart, professor of sociology at University of Somewhere, indicates in a speech given at Some Where for some reason (or group, or both!) that the current method of classifying students chronologically in the United States and Europe is inappropriate for many reasons.
Something like that, then refer to him by name (or some variation of it) throughout your speech..

I really have never heard anyone use the word ‘Firstly’ even though it is a legitimate word. That is really odd that I have never heard it used now that I think about it! Perhaps ‘Initially’, or ‘At the outset’….?

More word change suggestions, and yours are by no means wrong. Some words are just contextually better, or more politically correct maybe?!?! LoL!:
copied = borrowed , wrong = not conducive to their learning environment , on account of = because , makes = creates , catching = able to keep , An obvious fact is (you have to indicate support for a “fact”, so it may be easier to say) = It is often observed , Lastly = Finally , and Thus, in conclusion, = *use one or the other, not both.
There are others, but this is your speech. I do not want to make it mine (so to speak)! =o)
You can always throw in some adjectives and adverbs to lengthen your speech if need be, and Ty was right on your misspelled words and contractions too.
Good luck on your test!
thx guys it actually helped!!!
Actually english is my own language (I am canadian born and raised in canada) but it’s just that I live outside canada so the university I’m going to requires TOEFL even if you’re a native speaker! how mean of them!

you spelt organization wrong, professor wrong the second time, develop (not develope), stuDents wrong, “has” not haas, and ministries not ministeries… you need to go over your essay after your done, they will be checking for spelling…
“This makes problems” - would be better stated as this creates problems
do not use contractions in the essay… doesn’t, don’t, aren’t, won’t etc are not supposed to be used when you’re writing a formal essay… spell out both words… do not, are not, will not
otherwise the essay was pretty good… what sort of topics do you need? can you talk about anything? talk about your family? or an interest you have… 45 seconds is nothing…
