What are your thoughts on women having elective Caesarean sections?

Studies have shown that the C-section rate is up to 1 in every 3 women. While C-sections are meant to be used as an emergency method of delivering a baby, a lot of women are opting to have the C-section to avoid a long labour and delivery, and doctors are agreeing. Do you think this is right?

Answer #1

I saw this story on the news last night, I dont agree. I think C-section should only be for emergencies with labor and delivery and only up to the doctor. I know women get eager to have the babies, I get that way everytime, I just want it out, but let nature run its course. The baby will come when ready. You shouldnt get to pick your due date, what time of day you have it, be a woman and have your child the way it was intended, unless for emergencies to save the babies or mothers life.

Answer #2

As long as the woman is over due…i have no problem with her choosing to have a c-section rather than being induced into labor, especially seeing as about half of the women who have to be induced with pitocn end up getting c-sections in the end anyways. I will never agree with a doctor performind an elective c-section on any woman under 40 weeks though, thats just a selfish and unsafe move.

Answer #3

I think they should only be for emergencies. Its major surgery. It has long lasting effects on your uterus, causing complications for subsequent pregnancies. It may also impact negatively on the childs health and there has been some interesting research conducted regarding things like increased asthma incidence. It can also alter the way a mother responds to her child, resulting in a higher incidence of post-natal depression. So no… I mean obviously its the best course of action if natural birth is going to put the mother or child at risk, but it should only be for those situations

Answer #4

From what I’ve heard I dont think its safe and therefore irresponsible. Though if the doctors agree surely its okay?

Answer #5

Yea if they don’t need it don’t get it.

Answer #6

i don’t agree with it. my mom said she would of rather had a long labour than caesarean, when she had a caesarean with me because the umbilical cord was wrapped round my neck, stopping me breathing. after that she was unable to look after me for a week after then had to do stomache exercises for months after. plus theres the dangers of having an infection, i just think,if there’s no harm to the baby or the mother, caesareans should be for emergencies only.

Answer #7

I have no problem with a woman choosing to have it for whatever reason. It is our bodies and no doctor or anyone else for that matter should tell a woman what to do with her body.

Answer #8

That’s their choice. They know that it’s a major surgery and what the risks are. They obviously havent proven any sort of negative effects otherwise the practice would have been stopped. Unless it someone can come up with solid evidence showing C sections cause certain problems, I think it’s up to women and their doctors to make the best decision for them.
