Where does the term "a run for his money" originate from?

Answer #1

Hunting.

Not the going out and shooting animals type of hunting you see today…but the chasing animals with hound dogs type of hunting. :P

The term “run” in hunting refers to continuously running after hounds, which was fun. :]

Back then, the hunting was expensive…because you needed a good horse, the proper clothes, etc…

So, the hunters would say that spending all that money was worth it if you get a good run for your money.
