Taking a Dog out of the country

I’m planning a trip to Mexico, and I got my dog all his shots and I know I need a health certificate from a vet before I take off. My worries are getting him back into California from Mexico. Will my health certificate and proof of his rabis shots and vaccinations be enough? Has anyone taken their pet into or out of the country and back? I just want to make sure Im not going to have to leave my little dog in mexico! lol. Because I know how tight the airport rules are. Any feedback is appreciated!

When you leave Mexico with your pets, you will need to contact your country’s consulate to find out what paperwork and procedures are required to re-import your pet back to your home country. Some countries have quarantine regulations in place which means that your pet will need to be quarantined (at your expense) for a determined period upon arrival before you can take it home with you.

Usually, the paperwork required to re-import your pet to your home country is similar to that Mexico requires to bring your pet to Mexico. You’ll need a veterinary surgeon’s health certificate and proof of vaccines against rabies and distemper.

You will also need an exit permit for your pet when you leave Mexico. This is issued by SAGARPA, the Mexican agricultural ministry, free of charge, upon a visual inspection of your pet.

I must ask, why are you taking your pet to Mexico with you? And how long will you be out of the country?

that and make sure to immunize for kennel cough, my dog used to get it from traveling with other dogs.. its cheap and will alllow your dog to stay in a kennel if he has too during your trip if something happens.. i agree with the above, examine why you need to take your dog with you while on vacation firstly…
