Why are you not supposed to break pills in half?

Is it just with gel pills or all pills?

Answer #1

only gel pills

Answer #2

Thanks

Answer #3

no problem(:

Answer #4

It not just gel pills. I take an alergy pill everyday that the doctor said not to break it in half. She said it has something to do with the timing of how the pill desolves… :)

Answer #5

ALSO Time release tablets. And some prescription medications are supposed to be taken as directed or they don’t work right. Ask your doctor or pharmacist. Good Luck!!

Answer #6

then why do they sell pill crushers?

Answer #7

Depends on the type of the pill and the dosage recommended to by the doctor. Some pills(tablets) have a “break line” which divides the pill in half. Gel, Enteric Coated, etc. shouldn’t be broken.

Answer #8

That must be an enteric coated pill, or something similar. those types of meds are designed to resist dissolving even when exposed to stomach acids. They’re designed to be dissolved at the small intestines (where the absorption rate is higher). If you crush or split the med, it will become useless.

=)

Answer #9

Pill CRUSHERS are for people who have trouble swallowing a whole pill. Most pills CAN be split. I take several and most of them can be split, but I asked my doctor first.
