Do you believe in superstitions, or do you think it's all BS?

•Breaking a mirror - bad luck •Walking under a ladder - bad luck •Friday the 13 th - Bad luck •Black cat - bad luck •Itchy palm - good luck •Throwing spilled salt over your shoulder - good luck •Horseshoe - good luck •4-leaf clover - good luck Etc…

Answer #1

I personally don’t. I have done alot of things (broke a mirror, stepped on a crack, etc.) and nothing bad has happened to me ever. Some people may believe in it because something bad has happened to them on Friday the 13th or they have had a bit of bad luck.

Answer #2

Same here. If it was all true, then how come nothing that is supposed to happen, happen?

Answer #3

I have no idea about that lol, I wonder why :O time to google ! lol

Answer #4

The only kind of “superstition” I follow is the knock on wood one, and that’s mostly just habit from me and my family doing it my entire life. None of the ones you’ve listed have any effect on me, except for running back and forth under a ladder once while my Dad was working because he is really superstitious =P

Answer #5

If I had to choose one of those options, I’d say it’s all BS. No connection has ever been proven to exist between any of those listed occurrences, and “bad luck”, whatever that may be. We as humans tend to look for signs, or at least try to find reasons behind what happens in our lives. The reality is, life is simply a bunch of stuff that happens. There’s no “meaning” or purpose behind any of it.

Answer #6

they only ones ive believed in are the walking under a ladder, the horse shoe and throwing a pinch of salt over your shoulders. i havnt broken a mirror yet lol

Answer #7

haha i do. mainly with sports tho. haha. i do similar things every year. i watch the games from 1 tv in the same chair and wear something of the team. haha. every year the teams do well so i keep it up

Answer #8

Not in the American ones, my family is Italian and we believe in Malocchio “the evil eye”

Answer #9

No, It’s a waste of my time and brain power. 1st of all theirs no such thing as luck, Good or bad. What happens just happens you don’t have controll(And im not talk’n School Wise, weight wise, or you making bad desions)of it and nobody else does. I think people just look for “Signs”, for some unknown reason. In Reality, It is what is and theirs nothing you can do about it sometimes.

Answer #10

its all b,s thts just stuff ppl say to make themselves look cool or the tv says it to make a interesting show to make more money .

Answer #11

No not really. Personally I think the walking under ladders thing was invented by construction works who didn’t want people to knock over their ladders. :P.

Answer #12

i do cuz its bout the energy levels around us which is also wat religion is similar to. its all about the energy around u, thats wat carma is.

Answer #13

I’d have to disagree with you on the subject of luck. There is luck, everything isn’t just black and white in some terms. If you’re flipping a coin there is no way to be able to tell whether it will be heads or tails, it’s just you relying on a guess. That can apply to other things as well.

Answer #14

Superstitions are sometimes self-fulfilling prophecies.

Someone believing something is bad luck might note every bad thing that happens and attribute it to their superstition.

Likewise someone believing something is good luck will credit anything positive to it.

An extreme example would be Voodoo curses. Some believers are so terrified of them that their mental state can lead to their own death but to those who do not believe in them they have no effect. A related example is the placebo effect. A patient receiving a pill they believe will make them feel better will start to feel better. In some tests the placebo actually works better than the real medication.

Humans are not good at analyzing reality. That is why in every situation where concrete information is required (science, medicine, math) we use rigid rules of logic and objective measurements rather than going on by our perceptions. A hunch or opinion is almost as likely to be incorrect as correct.

Answer #15

I do. :| I never did, but then my mom said “If you whistle in the house, we’ll be poor.” and behold, my whistling has made my family poor. Lol. I believe in those Russian superstitions, xD

Answer #16

I know and that’s what im say. If you’re flipping a coin and it lands on heads that’s not luck. It justed happen, nothing or anyone had anything to do with it. It’s Chance,That’s why I don’t belive in Luck.

Answer #17

Lcuk- “good fortune; advantage or success, considered as the result of chance”

Luck is essentially the good outcome of chance. Bad luck would be the result of chance that isn’t desired.

Answer #18

I believe in superstitions.

Answer #19

I would rather have every one of you be rank atheists than superstitious fools. If superstition enters, the brain is gone. There is no mystery in religion. Mystery mongering and superstition are always signs of weakness. These are always signs of degradation. If one man cheats another for money, you say he is a fool and a blackguard. How much greater is the iniquity of one who wants to fool others spiritually! This is too bad. It is the one test, that truth must make you strong and put you above superstition. The duty of the philosopher is to raise you above superstition.
