I hate it but I do not think it is a waste, not waist, of time. Education is important.

It is a bad time to be starting a career now. While the top few percent are doing better than ever for everyone else wages have been stagnant or declining for the last 40 years. Most of the jobs that built a strong post-WWII middle class have since been sent overseas. There are jobs for people without a good education. There is Walmart and McDonalds. Jobs like this used to be a temporary thing for teen Summer jobs or college students working their way through school. Now these dead end jobs are all a lot of people can find. These jobs aren’t easy; places like this do not see employees as a resource to be invested in but a cost to be minimized. They want the most work while paying as little as possible. Indeed school often does suck and much of it is irrelevant but unless your goal in life is a dreary meager shell of an existence you better suck it up and learn everything you can.

Answer #4

Well, fillet, what a pessimistic view of modern life you have. Nevertheless dismally precise in hitting the nail squarely on the head. I feel so sorry for modern youth, we had it so good (most of the time) didn’t we? But what have we left for them? Very little that we can feel proud of I’m sad to say.

Answer #5

Oh, by the way, I only “liked” your answer because of the quality of the analysis, and definitely not because of the soul-destroying state of affairs that you so eloquently highlighted.

Answer #6

Oh the irony in this post…

Answer #7

I blame my own generation: the baby boomers. My parent’s generation really was the greatest generation. They survived the depression, defeated Fascism in WWII, then built an engine of prosperity in the 1950’s. They gave us boomers everything they didn’t have, good jobs, a thriving economy, and freedom from want. We basically screwed it all up for Gen X, Y, and millenials. After we enjoyed the benefits of the Great Society we dismantled it and left those who come after us on their own.
