Is it possible to have a successful Bipolar pregnancy without losing ur mind when going off ur meds during?

I am an (otherwise) healthy 25 year old female-and I am Bipolar. My husband and I would love to have a family, and unfortunately I am on the following drugs which make me hesitate becoming pregnant…

Lithium (mood stabilizer-has been my main everything since 2004 when all this crap went down), Lamictal (mood stabilizer), Abilify (anti manic), Xanax (anxiety/sleep) , Levoxyl (for thyroid)….

I am aware that I cannot stay on all of these meds while preggers to have a healthy baby without defects and all….I just want to be able to be pregnant and not have to stay in a mental hospital for 9 freakin months…I do know I will have to detox off the Xanax though.

Please help.

I’m not an expert at all, however this is something that you’ll need to discuss with your doctor. Most of the time anti-depressants and medication relating to these mood disorders are safe to use under supervision if you want to get pregnant or are planning to.

Answer #2

Obviously none of those are safe to use while pregnant. Some people can work it out, some can’t. I’d talk to your doctor. See what they say.

it is. BUT, there is a med you can take during pregnancy. Ask your doc about it. It is not as strong and effective. but it’s something. My friend is very bipolar and very pregnant with twins! she took this med for her last pregnancy and again with this one. I wish i could remember the name.

as for the thyroid meds. You should be able to stay on those. I take synthroid for hypothyroidism. But you will want to get checked because pregnancy can throw thyroid off! it’s important to keep it stable. You can also take tylenol pm for sleep or melatonin (i think that’s the name) for sleep. it’s a natural enhancer for sleep.

But don’t think you have to be completely unmedicated! there are many meds out there that are safe for pregnancy that can replace the current ones. I would suggest speaking with your family doc or better yet an ob/gyn. They will get you ready for all of this. good luck!
