Do you think everyone will start moving South because of the economy?

Because the Southern U.S. is supposedly cheaper than the NE region, do you think more and more people will start moving there? Would you? Why or why not?

Answer #1

The south is not as cheap as you think it is just as bad there as it is in New England, I have family there.

Answer #2

You must remember that people on this site are from all over the world and several different countries….what “south” are you speaking of? Im from the US and live very very far down south in Louisiana. The economy here is very cheap compared to alot of other places and thats one of the main reasons why we decided to stay here and not move elsewhere. Its also a blue collar town and the lay offs didnt effect the blue collar jobs as much as they did the corporate world so job stability is alot better down here in that sense. We rent a 3bedroom 2bath home for only $600 a month…thats almost unheard of in other places.

Answer #3

I live in Texas, and I have family in New York, so I know that housing and the price of living is a lot cheaper here. However, most people in the northeast US look down on (no pun intended) the south, and have preconceived notions. Granted, a lot of those notions are based in truth, but there are way more jobs here than in other parts of the country, and home prices are downright cheap where I live when compared to the NE, and even California.

Answer #4

So basically, no, I do not think people will move South.

Answer #5

I’ve read many manufacturing jobs traditionally based in places like Michigan and Ohio have moved South. Several new auto and chemical plants have opened in the Southern United States over the years, and obviously new job opportunities will bring more people.

Answer #6

People are moving to the south b/c this is where new job creation and business-friendly environment is. We don’t like unions much and don’t believe in endless entitlements. We run our state governments efficiently.
The people are lot friendlier, also. My relatives who live in NY and Chicago also a ridiculous stereotype of the south but this is only Hollywood driven. There are just as many trashy people up there as in the south. New Yorkers seem like they come from a different universe. Most of them don’t realize that there is life West of the Hudson R. Very shallow.

Answer #7

I live in Florida. It doesn’t get much further South than that, and things are dramatically cheaper than they are for relatives I have in New York, New Jersey, Wisconsin, and California. For instance, one pack of Newport cigarettes cost approximately 5-7 dollars here (not that I’m a smoker) and for my cousins in New York in the suburbs it is 13. That isn’t even as major as housing, food, bills in general. I’ve heard of a lot of people up there moving to TN & TX. It is cheaper in the South, generally speaking.
