How did it labels all start?

How did people start calling eachother preps &emos? Why do people call eachother “Posers”? I really dislike when I hear things like this because if people would love, appreciate, and not make fun of people for who they really are, they wouldn’t go out there and try to be something they’re not. What are some ways to help people realize this?

There have been labels for as long as there has been civilization….even back in the 1800’s, they had social statuses that didn’t always truly define the person who carried them. It’s a matter of fitting in…we tend to want to be around people who are like us, and by having a group of people who all like the same things, they become a clique, for good or ill.

Ikr? I have no idea where labels started, but i think it’s stupid! Like god,if someone cuts on themselves,or if they are deppressed and listen to screamo music, they are emo? And then that’s a bad thing? Or if a girl wears AE and loves pink, she’s just a stuck up prep? Like i think it’s rude and judgemental. Unless someone really is being a poser.. Poser is when someone is acting like a person they aren’t. Like if i go ‘’oh i’m gonna start shopping at Buckle because i want to be a preppy’’ that’s being a poser and labeling. It’s stupid. People shouldn’t support something they aren’t or act like someone they aren’t.. And people that are true about who they are, shouldn’t have to hide it because that makes them fall into the catorgoy of ‘’emo’’ or ‘’goth’’ or whatever. I listen to Alesana and Eyes Set To Kill. People call me emo… i used to be in love with David schmit from breathe carolina, and people say i’m a stupid emo kid. how the hell am i emo for that? –people are just mean. I think most of the time, people make fun of others because they don’t understand them. :/ oh well. People who want to make fun of me,for me being myself, they are the true posers.

Uhm labels are the way the mind categorizes stuff. It started when we started to communicate with other people (so a few millennia ago)? We had to be able to distinguish friend, foe, enemy, dangerous person. Thus labels arose. Now, even maybe a 100 years ago we didnt really have such personal labels because most people pretty much wore the same clothes (most people were not wealthy) and did the same sort of thing. It really is a new thing for people to be so individual in dress, music, literature etc. And the labels arose because as people we label. It’s just the way the brain works. And I have a hard time believing that everyone hates labels. Labels allow people to belong to a particular group. And people like belonging.
