Something in my shoulder...

Well, let me give you a run down…some years ago I was in a car accident and ever since then I’ve got shooting pain back in my shoulder blade. After the accident they said I had a pinched nerve or pinched disk or something…I do hair for a living so this often irritates the situation. What should I do about this..I know I should go to the doctor, but since I’m pregnant (22 weeks) they can’t do much about it, and I’m not willing to take anything for it (I won’t even take a damn benedryl for my ferocious allergies which my OB has even ok’d) and they can’t do X-rays…maybe right after I have the baby I might go, just to get it checked but until then does anybody have any ideas?

I have herniated disc’s in my neck and back, they are painful, sometimes extremely painful, I have had corrective bone fusion surgery to the one’s in my neck, where they took bone matter from my hip area and removed the herniated disc and put in the bone from hip in two disc’s c/3 & c/4. However after all the hoopalaa from the doctor that did this surgery, and other renouned physicians in the same field telling me how the surgery was sucessful and all, and all the MRI’s. A regular emergency room doctor pulled me aside and actually showed me the area on a regular X-ray I got taken for shoulder pain, that the bone fusion was NOT sucessful and that it had actually not healed like it should have. See what happens the disc’s which are a spongy type tissue that allows flexability inbetween bones, when replaced with bone material, they then are supposed to heal like a broken bone and fuse together, but mine did not, I clearly saw that on the X-ray myself when the ER doctor showed it to me. So here’s my best advice, being someone who has similar problems, I take hot bath’s every morning to losen up tight spots, it takes more time than a shower, but it works, I just slide down in the tub til the water is over my shoulders and neck area, and set there for about 5 minutes. Then during the day when I have flair ups (is what I call them) I have two icey type gell packs that I bought at the store, and keep in the freezer to be able to rotate them when needed. I try and find time to ice my shoulder/neck area down at the most for 20 minutes. You may find this to be helpful too, they used to say “use the heating pad” but I am gonna tell you I got hooked on that heating pad, I bought the largest one I could find, because my hip also gives me problems every since they removed bone from that area. The heating pad just seems to make it hurt more, honestly. The ice is not always pleasant like the heating pad was, but it works much better, I think the pain is caused by swelling in the area, even if you cant see it. My tired and sore shoulder and neck feel much better after icing them down for 10-15 mins. Also when you do have the baby, and decide to seek a physician for this matter, do yourself a favor and get a second opinion on it, they are more advanced in doing these type of surgery’s today than when I got mine done in 97, definately check into them using donor bone material for the disc replacement, so that you don’t have this hip pain all your life also, and make sure it is going to be something you feel is worth your time to do. You will not be able to lift anything heavy or maybe even not do hair for a time while you heal. I hope the icing works for you, hopefully enough that you don’t have to do anything else. Best Wishes
