What does SLR stand for with regards to digital cameras?

I want to purchase a new camera (more advanced than my current point and shoot).

Answer #1

the meaning of slr is a camera with a single-lens reflex (SLR) camera is a camera that typically uses a semi-automatic moving mirror system that permits the photographer to see exactly what will be captured by the film or digital imaging system (after a very small delay), as opposed to pre-SLR cameras where the view through the viewfinder could be significantly different from what was captured on film.

Answer #2

SLRs did not replace other cameras. SLRs do have certain advantages like easy interchange of lenses (though many rangefinder cameras allow limited interchangeability of lenses). For specialized work like macro photography SLRs are clearly superior. The biggest disadvantage to SLRs is their size since they need room for the reflex mirror and a screen and the weight of the large pentaprism on eyelevel cameras. Most quality rangefinder cameras use a moving brightframe to compensate for paralax errors.

It would be a false assumption that a SLR is automatically superior to a rangefinder camera in either the film or digital realm. There are some extremely high quality rangefinder cameras in both the digital and film realms.

Digital cameras typically have a preview screen that shows what the lens will photograph which approximates the functionality of through-the-lens viewing on an SLR. In fact; many digital cameras don’t even bother with a optical viewfinder.
