How can I cure my fear of singing alone at this competition?

I’m really into singing. I am a strong alto and play a big part keeping people in tune around me. Everyone says I have an awesome voice, and I think it’s good, too. I’m taking voice lessons to improve myself more. But the thing is… it’s sometimes hard for me to sing alone in front of people. I don’t know why, either!! Sometimes, it’s fairly easy for me when other times I almost get sick.

My town has a singing competition every year and I’d love to be one of the ten that sing in it. I just don’t know if I’d be able to bring my fullest. I want to make show choir next year, and we have to sing alone for everyone as part of the audition. These are two things I’d love to do… and maybe even get a lead in the musical my senior year.

Do you have any thoughts or ideas about how I could cure this? I really want to make these dreams come true! Thank you so much!!

That’s great that you have so much talent and a vision for the future with your singing. My step-daughter who is 16 has been in singing lesson’s since she’s been 8 yrs old. I’ve seen this young women go from being so afraid to step up to a mic and stand there and freeze. Poor thing, however she has conquered that stage fright. The times you’ve manage to get to the mic and sing is great. Think of it this way, you have something to aim for and that’s your senior musical and the town competition every year. Now you have something to work towards and true instead of the feeling sick. When that feeling comes over you just focus on your goals and when your singing don’t look into the crowd just find a focual point and sing to that. Eventufally you can start scanning the audience, and if that doesn’t help then start moving your arms and legs, walk around and get yourself wrapped into your song as if your singing it to our self. My step daughter has been in the production “Cats”, Annie and the Sound of Music with all the leading roles. So I know you can get to your dreams as well

You have to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Be critical of yourself.

Then what helps you to get over nerves and reassure yourself is to sing for relatives and friends and ask their honest opinion. Really get into these small “performances” as if it was the real thing.

You can also record yourself on the computer using sound recorder and uploading songs to http://www.daretosing.com and ask for critiques. A lot of people can help you out there.

O.K, the best thing is to start singing alone in front of family mambers every night so you get used to singing alone in front of people.
