How can I 'show not tell'?

How can I ‘show not tell’ (the english techneque thinga magigy) the man ran dramatically into the middle of the road ??

Answer #1

His boots crunched and rolled on the gravelly shoulder as he burst out of the tall weeds and onto the road. He was moving too fast to see the dump-truck racing towards him down the hill to the north and stopped inches short of being pulverized, yet was only buffeted by the truck’s gritty draft as it roared past him. After gathering himself and glancing up the highway, he crossed the other lane and jumped down into the ditch. As he carefully scaled the barbed wire fence, he looked over his shoulder, across the ancient pavement. He saw the dogs on the other side, pacing, waiting for him to begin the chase again. In that instant he realized they were trying to exhaust him, so that he would be an easy kill.

This may not fit, but you must see how descriptive this is. I didn’t just tell you “a guy was running across the street and slipped in the gravel and almost got hit by a truck.” You can use careful vocabulary and descriptions to construct imagery in the reader’s mind. This is how you show without telling in writing.
