How can I grocery shop on a budget?

Can you offer some good tips for grocery shopping on a budget? We want to buy healthy foods, no junk, so please offer those sorts of tips. Thanks!

Set a budget before you leave the house. Maybe it’s 50 dollars, maybe its 100. Are you shopping for food for the week or for the month? Whatever that budget is, stick with it. If you plan meals ahead of time you wont end up buying a bunch of food and letting things go to waste. Decide how much money you can afford to spend per month on food and do not go over that. Make a list of exactly what you need to buy. I even seperate it into Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks, and Household Needs so that I can plan meals and budget more effectively. This way I not only buy what I only need, but I can avoid buying more than what I need or impulsively buying items. An easy way to shop within your budget and eat healthy is to stick to the outsides of the store which have all the good for you foods such as veggies, fruits, dairy, meat, bread, etc. These items are normally cheaper that the processed packaged foods. The inside aisles harbor the twinkies, waffles, candy, chips, soda, and so on. Another tip: never shop when you’re hungry! It’s is a proven fact that people spend more money and buy more of what they dont need at grocery stores when they are hungry while shopping. Hope these tips help, good luck!

i would agree with them…always make a list with you on what you need, thats because if u dont bring a list…u try to remember by memory of what u need, and if thats so…then u wind up just taking junk food off the shelf. so always bring a list with you, so then u can get ur mind off all the junk foods and on what u r suppose to be getting.

The first rule is to not buy convenience foods. Buy ingredients and cook for yourself. Almost anything you buy ready made can be made more cheaply if you make it yourself (and home made will probably taste better as well).

Sometimes the tradeoff isnt’ that bad. I can make my own salsa but when I buy big jugs of Pace at Sam’s it is cheap enough so I decided it isn’t worth the bother. I used to make most of my own bread and pasta but lately I just haven’t had the time to cook that much.

Buy healthy filling foods like dry beans, brown rice, potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. Sometimes you can find better produce at farmer’s markets though in my experience it usually isn’t any cheaper than at the grocery store. Clip coupons and watch for sales.

First off, no matter what kind of food you’re shopping for…you should ALWAYS have a list with you. Or you’re going to end up buying useless items you won’t need for the time being. Always compare prices by viewing every brand possible. Remember, not all foods have to have a good name brand to be consumed by you… it can be a store brand and it’s cheaper usually. Also, if you have a house it helps to do a small garden if you are into healthy food…you can plant fruits & veggies.

Before you leave the house, I suggest that you set a budget and stick with it. Plan your meals in advance as well, so that when you go grocery shopping, you already have a list of what you plan to use and you do not end up buying things that would only be put to waste. You should also check out the discounted section of the store for fruits and vegetables. You can buy them in bulk to get a good deal and put them in the freezer if you are planning to use them for later. In addition, be a smart cook. Do not throw out vegetable or meat trimmings right away, as they could be used as stock for soup. You can research some recipes online to get an idea on how you can make the most out of your ingredients so you don’t keep on buying and going out of your budget.
