Is Shakespearean English the same thing as Elizabethan English?

are those two the same and if not how are they different and were can i get more information on this topic, thanks :*)

Answer #1

As far as I understand, both are early modern English. Thus they are pretty similar. In fact Mr. Shakespeare lived in the period of time that was called the Elizabethan area. So he basically wrote in Elizabethan English.

But as Mr Shakespeare was a Poet, (who made plays for public, middle class folks and Shakespeare also used vulgar language occasionally) and Queen Elizabeth was… well… the Queen, their personal language will have been different. I doubt that anyone in the royal families will have spoken in the same manner that people on the streets used back then.

What do you mean occassionally? Shakespeare was a dirty dirty man and his writing is FULL of vulgar language!

Answer #3

oh gawd, i’m english and i find the way both styles are long and drawn out..

it’s known more as ‘the queens English’ .. and trust me, only Brits from well funded and affluent schools talk as the queen does and pronounce language in the way she does.. in these cases education doesn’t merely cover the amount of information retained!

watch ‘princess Diana panorama interview’ on youtube, it give you a good insight into the language the more ‘educated’ (and no, i’m not referring to degrees or PHD’s here) I’m talking about the kind of education taught in finishing schools and such like…
