What are sex linked genes?

How are sex linked genes any different from genes that you normally get from your parents?

Answer #1

Sex linked genes are genes that are carried along the male or female line or show themselves in males or females. One good example is the gene for hemophilia. The gene for hemophilia resides on the X chromosome. Females have two X chromosomes so usually do not have symptoms if one of their X chromosomes carries the gene. However, males have only one X chromosome so if they have the gene then they have symptoms. Queen Victoria carried the gene but not the disease and all of her sons had the disease.
