What are some good sales techniques?

I’m beginning my first job at a retail store tomorrow and I want to know what are some good techniques. I want to be the best I can be. Help me!

Answer #1
  • Be observant … learn to know when a customer has an interest in something and make your move
  • Ask your customer what they are looking for … be thorough (what colour? what size? for what purpose? etc.)
  • Know your product … if you can offer your customer something that is more fitting, you are more likely to make a sale
  • Deliver … don’t just talk big, do it
  • Understand your key words (Good: sale, free, save, guarantee … Bad: buy, purchase, cost, sell)
  • Sell your benefits … instead of saying “this looks good on you”, try “this material is made to soften your curves”
  • Options … don’t leave your customer with one option … find several items that match your customers needs
  • Close the sale … once your customer shows interest, suck them in, “I can ring that up for you”
  • Upsell … “We have some silk scarves on sale right now that would complete your outfit”, “Today we’re offering a buy 1, get 1 free deal on gloves.

I work in a gym and it’s a bit different from working in a shop but some of my techniques might apply to you. The main membership we offer comes with a class option so i try to find out what times they would be coming into the gym how often and whether would want the classes so i can offer them the better membership to save them money

While everyone claims high pressure selling doesn’t work, or that it doesn’t work on sophisticated clientele, the truth is that salespeople use the hard sell because more often than not it works. I fought this for a long time thinking that customers want to be respected and not badgered into a sale but my experience is that if you don’t close the sale right there you will never get the chance again; if you let them walk out the door without a purchase chances are they will make their purchase at one of your more aggressive competitors. Customers are a lot like sheep, if you guide them to the cash register you can fleece them. Tell yourself that they will make a purchase and that their only choice is cash, check, or credit.
