Would it be safe to use a regular nail file on my dog, as long as I'm gentle?

My dog has really sharp nails. I was thinking of clipping her nails, then filing them a bit to round them off so they won’t be so sharp…or just file them without clipping them.

Would it be safe to use just a regular nail file like you use on human nails, as long as you are gentle?

Answer #1

Yes I don’t think there are any problems with it as long as you are careful and don’t file them too short :)

Answer #2

I’ve never heard of anyone ever using a human nail file on a dog, but I don’t see why not. I just think it’ll take some time. Dog nails are a lot harder than our nails. Many dogs don’t like having their feet touched for long periods of time.

It sounds like they simply need to be clipped. If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, you can take her to a dog grooming place and they’ll do it for around $10. (if you have a Petsmart near you, you can get it done there)

Answer #3

A file would be better because it can hurt them when you just cut them

Answer #4

Be sure not to file too low or damage the quick of the nail, this can be very painful and cause bleeding. They also have a tool called pedi paws that is much fasted than manually filing and comes with instructions. Puppys nails are much softer than a full grown dog so you will not have to file as much.

Answer #5

Well, first off, I am not getting the PediPaws. I have heard too many bad things about it. Also, my dog isn’t a puppy…she is over a year old.

Answer #6

No dog’s nails are very tough so you might break the file. You want to either go to the groomers or get one of those special dog filers that you see on commercials on tv

Answer #7

Lol. My sister used to use a nail file on the parrots we had, it is a lot safer than clipping and you are less likely to cause bleeding. If you can get her to sit still with it, go ahead, just still be careful so that you don’t cause bleeding.

Answer #8

Thank you. :)

Answer #9

You are definitely NOT supposed to use human nail clippers because if you cut too deep it will cut part of their nervous system or I think just make them bleed and damage the nail really bad.

Answer #10

She never said anything about human nail clippers…?
