Why do we rub people with our thumbs?

I’m not sure how to phrase this question but I mean it like when you’re holding someone’s hand of have your hand on their shoulder or on their back, it’s like an automatic instinct to rub them with our thumb. Our hand remains on them and our thumb starts rubbing them in a back and forth motion. I’m just not quite sure why we do that. People just do it automatically, I hadn’t noticed it until just a little while ago. I’d love to hear some thoughts.

I guess that it’s just to kind of a way to say “ I’m still here “ or that “ I’m here for you “ In my opinion its just letting people know that if you need a sholder to lean on that their there for you and that they wont let anything hurt you. It is just a little habit that makes you feel just that much better and secure.
