Rock vs. Rap

I am a fan of both, although the newer rap AND rock sucks imo. In many ways there alike. Rock and Roll and the rebel spirit is very alive in Hip Hop at least the real stuff. As far as rock having more skill, if you listen to some of the quality hip hop music out there there is tremendous talent from rapping to beats to subject mattter and wordplay. I think hip hop and rap have a lot in common so I cant give it to one or the other

It’s clear that 90% of you are ignorant pricks. 90% of that 90% goes to the people saying Rock. Why is that? Because you immediately say “RAP IS MEANINGLESS AND TALKS ABOUT WEED AND MONEY AND HOES AND SHAWTY GET LOW AND DOESN’T REQUIRE SKILL”. Also to the few people who said they like rap more, try learning how to play a guitar. If you only like the beats in rap. You would appreciate rock SO much more.

Ok ok, Let me just Confirm for you that YES I do play all those instruments. And I never said that you could write a song in a matter of seconds. It takes time and dedication to make a song. I know that. BUT if I wanted to make an amazing “metal” song YES it would take me a very long time becuase I want it to sound PERFECT. BUT if I wanted to make an amazing rap song it would take a very long time as well becuase again I would want it to sound perfect. Both genre’s have an equal amount of talent. I have been playing piano for 2 years, guitar for 2 years, bass for a year, drums on and off and I am a Dj, and mix music. You are so close minded when it comes to music. Its pathetic. lol I would say rock. But this is such a stupid question. Rap or rock, which one is better? No one can answer that question. Its all based on your own preferance. If you like rock, then rock will obviously be better than rap, but if you like rap, rap will obviously be better than rock. I havent listened to enough rap? I listen to a lot of rap dude, talib kweli, mobb deep, mos def, common, I also listen to mainstream sh!t because of the beats, I used to make hip hop beats and was trying to go into a career in that but its really hard to make it in music so I went into a more realistic thing, but yes dude I do listen to alooot of rap yo I listen to country aswell, I listen to jazz, I listen to a lot of things, you assume I dont listen to enough rap/hip hop because I like another style of music over it. I just dont find someone rappin on a beat about how hard it is in the hood interesting and I find it really unoriginal and uncreative. if you play all those instruments than you should know its harder to play an instrument than just putting a bunch of thoughts on a paper that rhyme, you should also know its really hard to sing and play an instrument at the same time, and you play drums right? I’ve met a lot of drummers that tell me you have to separate your mind because you have to do 1 thing with your arms and totally different things with your legs, I still doubt you play any of that because you make it seem like bands sit down for a minute and have a new song, wait YOU DID SAY THAT, and by the way I can compare them because rap music and rock music is … music duhhh. they both have patterns and loops, metal has loops but they are played by instruments, they switch up tempos they change up melodies and drum patterns all in one song, rap is the same thing the difference is the loops is the same thru out the song, like a 2 or 4 bar loop and it repeats itself, the melodie barely switches up unless its the chorus remember dude I used to make hip hop beats they are pretty easy to make, but ill grant you that yes its my personal opinion that metal is better, but you cant deny that making metal is harder and takes more talent that rap dude seriously c’mon

Ok please be more positive. Rock is Good but seriously some stuff like that screamin’ crap is just wrong. Rappers are criticized by you rock enthusiasts but really its much harder to rap then to learn to play an instrument (drums guitar piano) so why dont you try rapping sometime.

Wel personally I think that both of this genre music have no message in them I read some comments saying that rap has no message but rock does I never heard any good message from rock either. But I just think if you dont like rap or rock dont listen to it.

Personanally I just like ROCK a whole lot more than rap, but I do like some rap songs , But It def. has to do with the kind of person you are and personality

REAL rap and hip hop are just as good as the best rock & roll, as originally it was all heavily rock & roll inspired, I.e. Run DMC, who basically invented hip hop. Basically any rap/hip hop since the early 90’s has all sucked.

And it takes tremendous skill and knowledge to actually rap, as you have to pretty much be a master of the English language, have a large vocabulary, etc. That does not, obviously, apply to modern rap (or crap, as I call it).

But rock also now has it’s faction of crapiocity, such as the crap that passes off as punk and heavy metal these days.

I think that it really does take talent to do both. They are both different and some people like rap and some like rock some like both…and there is nothing wrong with that…

I’ve always been one to favor Rock, Metal, Alternative…etc… But that doesn’t make rock better than rap. I’m a native Detroiter, so I’ve got to support my ‘homie’ (ugh) Eminem, but My fav band of all time Is Fall Out Boy. So it really depends on your perspective.

(But if I had to choose, It would be rock, duh!)

rock has been around way longer it also is famous around the world and not just for american bands some of my favorite bands arent from the U.S. Rush is from canada, Tokio Hotel is german T.A.T.U is russian I love rock because there are more types of rock than rap rap has hip hop and R&B rock has metal, death metal, alternitive, classic, punk, heavy metal, emo, and progressive rock.

To whocarez, since when in order to make GOOD music does someone have to pick up an instrument and practice for 6-7 years until they are good enough to form a band? There are such thing’s as “sh!t” bands as there are “sh!t” rap groups. And those sh!t bands could have practiced their asses off for 8 years but still could end up sounding like sh!t, when a rap artist wakes up one morning and decides to make a rap song and it becomes a multi million dollar hit. What would you call that? I would call that talent. Pure talent.

I prefer rap, hip hop, and r&b, rather than rock… but it really depends on my mood, and who the artist singing/raping the song is!

If I had to choose one I would have to say rap because the GOOD rap songs to me are better than the GOOD rock songs. I like real rappers who can freestyle which believe me takes a lot of skill and talent. BUT Rap music is dying. It is all the same now. GARBAGE. theyre both awesome but metal is way better than rap, its actual people playing instruments earning money this way, shredding the axe banging the double bass, and way more feeling, rap is dope and everything but at the end of the day its just a synth loop and a dude rapping on it.

I prefer ROCK because rapping consists of doing the same thing FINDING WORDS that rhyme and talking them into a song

You know…this doesnt seem like a Music genre discussion. This actually sounds kind of rascist on both sides. When you say people that listen to rock are more educated,YOU yourself sound like a complete idiot. I think we all know the whole Rap(black) and Rock(white) think okay? I listen to BOTH and for the record I can speak English,Japanese,French,and Ethiopian so am I dumb for listening to rap? I think not. And for the other side that is dissing rock, Rock is a great genre and deserves the upmost respect! But we also fail to remember that rock…rap..hip/hop…pop and all the others came from early blues and jazz considering slave hymns. So before you try and diss all these two genres think about whats good about them. :D

yes there are many good rappers now but what happend to the old school rap?nowadays many (not all) rappers rap about the same thing..its gets me very annoyed. personaly kanye west is the only uneeek and true hip/hop rap artist out there today..but same goes for rock..I prefer rock over rap..but some rap is still very good

I think this question is more appropriately answered based on the number of original CD’s a person has aquired [uh, by purchase that is]. Though I listen to select artists from nearly all genres. I would say at least 95% of my money goes to hard rock, heavy metal, and alternative. And their many sub-genres. That means the other 5% of my musical interest must be divided into rap, r&b, country & pop, etc.

BTW, new Staind, Slipknot, Chimaira & Metallica is on the uprising.
