Rock and Roll (also known as Rock ‘n’ Roll), is a genre of music that evolved in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and quickly spread to the rest of the world. It later spawned the various sub-genres of what is now called simply ‘rock music’. It is linked to the style of dance known as lindy hop and partly originates from there.

it started with skiffle. it was a type of rock in the 50’s but it sometimes had washboards and banjos ad stuff like that. oh and harmonica

Rock and Roll music started as a simplification of Rhythm & Blues. Rock and Roll appealed more to kids because it seemed less ethnic (read black) and easier to dance to than Rhythm & Blues. Much of the early opposition to Rock and Roll was because white parents lumped it in with Rhythm & Blues and considered it black music.

Rock and Roll was also influenced by Gospel as well as Country and Western. Later Rock and Roll became simply Rock and we had the British invasion (Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc) then came Punk Rock, Glam Rock, and Metal.
