What are the ridges on the "F" and "J" keys for?

I noticed recently that the “F” and “J” keys on my QWERTY keyboard have ridges on them… and on the computers at school. There is probably a reason for this… I just can’t figure it out. So why DO you they have them?

Answer #1

There’s this certain thing you learn when you learn to type it’s to put your first finger on f and then on the other hand j so you know where you’re going when you type

Answer #2

so you can find them without looking. they’re in the “home” row of the keyboard and they are where your index fingers should rest before you begin typing

Answer #3

I believe it’s mainly because that is where you place your index fingers when you are typing using the home row keys…which is the correct way to type.

Also, another reason to go along with that…could be the same reason there is a little raised dot on the “5” button on a phone. So you can find buttons without looking.

Answer #4

It’s basically just letting you know that they are the home keys and that is where your index fingers rest on the keyboard. I call them my homies lol :)

Answer #5

It is as was already said, a way for touch typists to find the home row keys with their index fingers. Apple used to put the ridges on the ‘d’ and ‘k’ keys to find with your middle fingers. A little confusing for people who used both keyboards.

Answer #6

They signify the location of the “home keys” of the keyboard. They help you feel for where to place your fingers so you can type properly on the keyboard
