Do you think restaurants should be allowed to automatically factor in a 20% tip on your bill?

Two Toronto restaurants have begun doing this, but they say it’s optional.

What do you think? Is it really optional if the tip is already on your bill?

Answer #1

No. I think you should tip more or less depending upon the service.

Answer #2

No because that would remove the waiter’s incentive to provide excellent service.

Answer #3

yeah it’s optional a few place around here do that normally if your more than 4 people. i never pay it if it’s added in. i minis it from total and leave that on table. i’m insulted when they do that and refuse to be a part of it

but i always tip my server and tip them well i never leave less than 5 even if all i do is have a cup of coffee the smallest i ever drop is a dollar with normally sharpy on it stateing why they only got a dollar

Answer #4

nope ..because service differ from one place to another

Answer #5

No i don’t think it’s right. How about if the waitress don’t deserve a 20% tip but you have to give it to her anyways. It’s stupid !

Answer #6

No nat at all. If i have sh!tty service then they dont deserve tip that big or one at all

Answer #7

No. I tip depending on quality of the service. If it’s crappy service, I don’t tip them.

Answer #8

The system in the US is that wait people are underpaid assuming they will make tips. The first 15% you give your waitperson really isn’t tip; it is part of their pay. The real tip is how much above 15% you tip. If your waitperson is simply not doing their job than you might stiff them but otherwise 15% is the minimum that is fair. I dislike restaurants who automatically tack tips on for large parties. Seems presumptuous to me and to tell the truth it hurts them because I almost always tip more than the mandatory tip but when the tip is automatic I don’t pay more.

Answer #9

NOPE - I have been to many restaurants that added the 20% charge - very frustrating, especially taking my right away to tip or not to tip - what should be done is we should all write our congress and senate to do away with that law about taxing waiter/waitresses tips. I live in florida and know alot of waitresses and they do make good money ($150 per night on average) but they only work a few nights and having to put up with rude customers with a smile isnt fun - but this is a service and tourist state so we live with what we can find for work. And yes most make little to nothign in wages - they are the only class of workers whos wages are set BELOW minimum wage - which I believe here is $7.65 not 100% sure.

Answer #10

Answer #12
