Rescued Bird Advice

Yesterday I rescued a miner bird. It was sitting on a footpath in front of a school and when approached it could not run away nor fly. The bird’s legs seem to be too weak to hold up its body and while it can move its wings and flutter a bit it doesn’t do anything.

Because there is a number of children in the area who would be quick to tormente it I picked it up and took it home thinking that it didn’t have long to go so I would let it die in my backyard then bury it. However the bird seems to be quite awake and fine after the night. We’ve dropped little bits of water onto his beak for him to drink but we’re having problems with food. Someone suggested trying to feed it a little bit of tinned cat food (which is meaty) so I’ve left a little bit in there.

The bird seems quite alert as an ant crawled into the box I’m keeping it in (it’s basically like a little tray, because since the bird wont move off the ground whenever it excretes waste it gets stuck in it’s feathers, this way I can remove the linning and keep it a little clean) and it picked up the ant, shock it and chucked it out.

Does anyone have any advice to help the bird? What to feed it? I’ve been told insects but are there particular kinds? Will it eat any seeds? anything that will help.

first of all it depends on the kind of bird, crow and black birds will eat anything, try bread, most any wild bird will eat that. second, if it is a wild bird you need to take in in somewhere, to some sort of clinic because it could be poisened and having a poisned bird in your house is very dangorous. You were right to give it water, and to take care of it, but wild birds are wild for a reason, they’re are birds you can keep as pets but wild ones you pick off the street are not a good pet. Really, though, you should take it in to some sort of clinic, look up animal clinics on google and try to find one. they wouldn’t make you pay really. either that or just care for it until it dies, again though, it might have a diese that you could very likely catch.

Hi, I you’ll need to find out what type of bird it is in order to feed it. Generally you can get it some chick-chick - wild bird seed and if it is a baby bird mix it with some water (not too much) and force it down its throat. or just put in it a bowl and the bird will eat by itself. It is also a good idea to take the bird to a vet just to make sure everything is fine.
