Would religion become a minority any time soon?

This isn’t meant to offend those that are part of it but does it seem like, in our times, that religion, well at least the bigger ones like Christianity and Catholicism might be… Depopulated lol?

Answer #1

85% of the US is practicing religious of some form or another…the other 15% is atheist or agnostic.

Unless and until we have rabid door knocking atheist and agnostics “preaching” the lack of or possibility of there being no god or divinity…or that no single culture can possibly OWN the one true answer and prophet…

…well, it won’t happen :)

Answer #2

Well it’s slow progress but 15% is a big chunk though :) thanks for teh answer.

I think humans are a naturally religious species. Our nearly unlimited imagination allows us to contemplate the infinite so we can imagine an infinite being. Also, being a social animal as our world gets bigger through travel and communication we need a larger alpha male to lead us so we conveniently imagine one. Of course there is the usual fear of the unknown (esp. death) that religion deals with. Our desire for justice and fairness in a cruel and unfair world is another motivator to believe.

Even if all current religions could be eliminated people would just invent new ones.

Answer #4

the way i see it is that religion is a way out of the reality. religion supplies us with a form of hope and happiness. Sometimes just believing that there is someone to pray to is enough to make you belive that the wordl is not going to end and that there is a place of non-pain where everything is happy. People need to believe in something, most people anyway, and the ones that don’t have their reasons for it. I dont believe in god because science just makes more sense to me, believing in a deity of any kind just seems redundant to me as spiritual beings are just that- spiritual…

Answer #5

I think its good to have hope! If turning to a certain faith or religion does that for you weather you are spiritual or not…keep the faith! Its something to hold on to!

I am all for hope…with all the things we see(i have seen) & have to go through(i have been through) a little hope is a long way to perhaps find something better & worth wild…a path to some sort of happiness…true or false…its still another try which is better then just giving up…is it not true?!♥

Belief in religion, gods, spirits, etc. may very well be “wired” into our brains, a part of our evolution. There is quite a bit of research being done on this. If you google “God on the brain” it will yield a very good introductory article on the BBC website discussing further.

Whether or not religion is ingrained into our biology, it’s certainly ingrained into our culture. I don’t think it will go away any time soon. Then again, how religious a people are depends on what role religion plays in their society. I live in Europe, one of the most secular continents on the planet, if not the most secular. For most of history, Europeans were fiercely religious, and fought many wars over religious issues. But the churches gradually saw their power weakened by many events (Black Death, Treaty of Westphalia, Age of Enlightenment, World Wars, etc). Today, in many countries, the church relies heavily on state support simply to survive, and many Europeans don’t attend church. Europe’s violent historic relationship with established, institutional religion has made Europeans skeptical of it.

But, many Europeans are still superstitious, have spiritual beliefs of some sort, and succumb to pseudoscientific “New Age” trends. And, religion may be back on the rise in the Eastern European countries, where it was suppressed for years. So even in a place that has, maybe permanently, abandoned organised religion, Europeans have not completely given up on faith. Kind of makes you wonder whether religion will ever disappear completely, doesn’t it?

Answer #7

Maybe not invent a new one but we’d definitely come up with something similar to religion that would cause just as much fighting as religion has. =/

Answer #8

In my Opinion, I think the world would be better off without religion in terms of differences. So many wars and deaths have been in the name of religion. Not saying dieing for what you believe is the worst thing but so many lives and advancements in technology have been sacrificed for religion. :(

Answer #9

Ohhh no, no, no. The world would not be better off without religion. While wars are fought over gods and differences of belief, the idea of a pair of omniscient eyes and omnipotent hands in existence keeps so many people in check. Even those in doubt sometimes keep themselves under control “just in case.” On top of that, if religion were to suddenly be proved perfectly imaginary, think of the number of people that would go, literally, insane at the thought. People that base their entire existence on being good people because, in the end, they will be judged. People that forgive the worst of things because, in the end, the ones that do wrong will have what they deserve. People that literally stop their entire lives to preach, to meditate, only to find out that eternal life is nonexistent, and they’ve spent the only life they have doing something that is now undone. In addition to that, thousands of people rely on the thought that there is someone always there, even when they are at their loneliest, to listen to them, to take care of them, and to be their closest friend and father figure. These people would reject the proof, and only in that way, remain themselves. Thankfully there is no proof, and there never will be. To answer the actual question though, I don’t think that religion will disappear. As someone said before, even if the religions we have now do somehow die down at some point, new religions will be invented and followed. Isaac Asimov once wrote a story about a religion invented by the scientists of the world, when religion had become obsolete, to keep people hopeful, united, productive, and a religious government was put into play, all to be sure that the world would stay together.

Answer #10

There will always be unanswered questions. As long as there are questions that remain unanswered, people will fill in the blanks with their particular religious beliefs. I dont think it’s going anywhere.

Answer #11

I think i just have an act for finding those who aren’t religous, at least online. :P

Answer #12

acording to the prophecy it started to be depopulated since 1919 and will disappear very soon…

Answer #13

When you say not being religious, you mean they do not believe in God or they do not believe in religion?
