Religion I recently gave up any hope on being a Christian

I recently gave up any hope on being a Christian mainly because I hate it. Over the summer I went to a Church camp called Lift. I was saved the first night of this camp and didn’t exactly know what I was getting myself in to, but I thought I could successfully take this step. I meant every word I said that night with all my heart and soul. I’ve read pieces of the Bible - I focus on the Ten Commandments - and there’s one specific commandment that just didn’t make sense to me and it caused me to believe other things. I also still believe that Jesus is the son of God and that he died on the Cross for our sins and rose again, I just feel differently about it. One thing I remember specifically from this camp was that even when you let go, God is still holding on. What if I want him to let go?? I want to live a non Christian life. You can think that everything I’ve just asked makes no sense at all, but it’s the only thing that makes any sense to me. Don’t try to convert me, it turns people away. And if any of you find this offensive, just remember that maybe I find trying to convert offensive.

I’m really anti these ‘Christian camps’, they seem like a place of indoctrination and brainwashing.

As Toadaly points out, if you believe Jesus is the son of ‘God’, and died on the cross for your sins, you’re technically Christian. However- you express the desire to get away from ‘God’, which is something you can’t do while having these beliefs.

The way you’ve expressed this question suggests that it’s more that you don’t want to be the Christian that the people on that camp wanted you to be. As much as I am a skeptic, and do not believe in ‘God’ (or any other deities for that matter), it’s my understanding that faith is personal. My mother considers herself Catholic, she was raised in the Catholic faith, she knows her bible, but she doesn’t go to church, and she doesn’t condemn others who don’t believe as she does. As much as some would say she’s ‘not a real Catholic’, her beliefs are her own. It’s the same with you- if you believe In God and Jesus, but don’t wanna follow what the church wants you to, that’s up to you.

I was saved the first night of this camp and didn’t exactly know what I was getting myself in to

thats impossible. if you didnt know what you were getting into, then you were never saved. you just fooled yourself by your emotions and possibly tears.

you must know what your accepting in order to start a relationship with the Lord. if you dont know, and expect salvation, your not understanding the whole concept.

I want to live a non Christian life.

I understand that. cause I do too. not as much as I used to though, but the temptations of this life sure are TEMPTING.

bottom line is. every christian wants to sin like the world, but we understand now as Christ followers, that it cant be so, we must be different and set the example. God has placed it in our hearts now to not want to sin.

it really just depends how much you love God. you can say you do love God, you believe in Jesus, but if you could care less about following Him, and his teachings, and want to continue to live a selfish life, then wheres the belief and love for God there?

a Christian accepts this:

–that we are a fallen race. –that Jesus came for a rescue, because God wants to give humans a 2nd chance. –that Jesus’s love, is the only way to directly connect ourselves with communication to God –Jesus being God, therefor must be our king. –we are giving up our old ways, OUR lives, for a new one to follow the Lord. –we are going to try to seek the Lord daily, for he is Life itself, and we want a better relationship with out Creator.

lots of people go on church retreats, think they are accepting the Lord as their Savior and all, but they simply fool themselves due to the peer pressure around them, and the impact of a good message, which im positive you heard..

without understanding these things, one cannot have ever asked God into their hearts for REAL. that wasnt the real deal. your intentions right now prove it. and thats the truth. sorry. but it is.

doesnt have to stay this way though…the Jesus you believe in is there. God just watched you finish reading this…

Answer #3

You have to find faith within yourself, or else a religion is a meaningless scapegoat.

Answer #4

we all pick our fate child…and we have god given free will

Answer #5

why I believe this, the very first commandment… you shall have no other gods before me. what other gods?? if he’s the only god, then who is he referring to

people can make ANYTHING their Gods. back then people made stuff out of stone or Gold just to worship for fun, because they couldnt see God.

also it could be translated as a God, being the thing you love the most, or spend most time wanting to do. like watching tv, women, money.

and concerning the idols, well when your paying attention to others things, as if they are more important to you than God, then your relationship with God isnt as strong. and thats why its wrong. your spending your time on earth doing whatever you want, forgetting God with whatever else your putting in his place, be it music, tv, ect. (just as examples).

I was saved. I wanted christ in my life…now I just don’t

look up prodigal son. you might relate..

when one becomes a Christian life is not easy, it might get worse. obviously with people critisizing, bullying, calling you out in public. certain rules, expectations.

its hard, duh. but you just have to hold on and know God is walking you through it.

no matter how many times you try to abandon him, stab his back, or let him down, He will never try to abandon you…

hello :) seems I knocked the wrong door but reading some pushed me to asnwer :) can you imagine this is my first post, even if its the first 5 minutes as a member let me hit the point first I’m a Muslim what was interesting is

“you shall have no other gods before me. what other gods?? if he’s the only god, then who is he referring to. and the second commandment… it talks about not making and worshiping idols. why would god worry about it??”

well before Christianity people were lost and acting very silly creating their own Gods, thats why its mentioned in all of the holly books to stop believing in all Gods before him, isnt that obvious. any religion must be close to logic so think about it in a logical way then you can decide.

hope I didnt bother you :D bye4now

Answer #7

okay, it’s a different story than what you think. I didnt want to share what I believe but here it is… I believe that all gods exist. every god from every religion…I believe that they all exist and that they all helped to create the universe as well as us. the thing is, I hate them all. if you really want to know why I hate them you can ask. why I believe this, the very first commandment… “you shall have no other gods before me.” what other gods?? if he’s the only god, then who is he referring to. and the second commandment… it talks about not making and worshiping idols. why would god worry about it??

it doesn’t make sense to me. I believe that the bible is true. every word…but I just think that it doesn’t make sense that god is worrying about people believing in other gods when he was the the first to know. how did he know other religions would form?? well, he’s god so he knows, but why didn’t he stop them from forming?? to test faith?? it doesn’t make sense.

if you feel like you need to know more you can ask me, but you probably won’t like the answer.

and yes I know the ten commandments are followed by judaism but christians believe BOTH the old AND new testaments. christians worship jesus as god, god created the earth which happened in the old testament, and the ten commandments are in exodus 20 which is the NEW testament.

yes, I know jesus is the son of god not actually god.

Answer #8

* I also still believe that Jesus is the son of God and that he died on the Cross for our sins and rose again, I just feel differently about it.

You still sound like a Christian to me. You may disagree on certain points with the religion you were brought up with but you seem to still accept the main tenets.

* One thing I remember specifically from this camp was that even when you let go, God is still holding on. What if I want him to let go?? I want to live a non Christian life.”

Why are you so worried if you already are questioning other teachings of your church?

Hon, you need to learn a lot more about religions and spend time reflecting on what you believe. In general youth ministries are more about making Christianity attractive to youth than to educate them. It sounds to me like you are growing past their simple message. Once you have learned more you will be able to make a more informed decision.

Answer #9

it sounds like you are not saved and youve been lied to. I will not try to convert you but G-d will seek you to save you . we will pray for you. : )

Answer #10

and also, when I say I didn’t know what I was getting myself in to, I meant I knew what I was accepting, I just didn’t know what everyone would expect of me afterwards. I was saved. I wanted christ in my life…now I just don’t.

Answer #11

There are many paradoxes in religion. Some believers never notice them, some say that God is inscrutable and leave it at that, some spend a great deak of time trying to reconcile them.

You are going off in an interesting tangent but you probably would enjoy studying philosophy to see how some of our greatest minds have thought about the nature of being.

Answer #12

* I also still believe that Jesus is the son of God and that he died on the Cross for our sins and rose again

I’m pretty sure that means you’re still a Christian. Nonchristians don’t believe this.

Answer #13

God will never let go. You were made in him image.. and one day you’ll relize that His love for you is stronger than your desire to get away from Him. He’s always going to hold on, it’s a blessing and not a curse. You’ll be glad one day that he never let go. I promise, rather you want to now or not. Thats not e converting you. That honestly answering your question.

Answer #14

Who said it was going to be easy just don’t give up,it’s so easy to produce Sin’s being a Christian is a daily thing “it’s so easy”=SIN. Answer #15

hmmm maybe you should check out Unitarian Universalism. Its a religion that has seven priciples that all say respect everyones beliefs and that you have a right to believe WHATEVER you want to and so does someone else. For example, if you were to attend a service, there would be you christians, you buddhists, you pagans, etc. The community is made up of all religions, and you believe what you want and as long as you accept other peoples beliefs as legitamit (sp) then alll righty. You might want to research that, see what the principles are and stuff. Check it out, it might help you out

Answer #16

I also still believe that Jesus is the son of God and that he died on the Cross for our sins and rose again, I just feel differently about it.

This is pretty much the definition of christianity. What about it specifically do you reject?

thats impossible. if you didnt know what you were getting into, then you were never saved. you just fooled yourself by your emotions and possibly tears.

Ah yes, the “not a true christian” gambit. You may not like it, but people de-convert all the time - they can’t all not be ‘true christians’.

Answer #17

- I focus on the Ten Commandments-

There’s your first problem…

and there’s one specific commandment that just didn’t make sense to me and it caused me to believe other things.

Which one? Since the Ten Commandments are considered Mosaic law, and followed by JUDAISM, and not necessarily Christianity… maybe you shouldn’t focus on them so much…

I also still believe that Jesus is the son of God and that he died on the Cross for our sins and rose again, I just feel differently about it.

…uhhh… differently HOW?

Answer #18

Well I used to be christian and I was baptized and wot not. But after things happened to be I started not to believe so much. I tried different religions but they are all basically the same. so now im Atheist and happy as ever. Try not to let people convert you if its Christianity or athiestism whatever you feel in your heart is right for u.

Answer #19

If your trying to be none Christian then why would it matter what “he” does, not saying your wrong or any thing I would never do that. I am just asking why it matters if you want to not say care of believe or what ever?

A long while ago, I was Christian. I was “saved” when I was 9. But then a lot of stuff happened and it was bad and I moved away from that and towards something else and it helped a lot. When I stopped I just stopped caring about all of it. If there is a god and he decided if I get into heaven I really don’t care what he thinks of what I do because I live my life the best I know how, I do good things and help people when I can. I also use magic, and if he hates me for it then so be it.
