Red fox?

Is it possible to buy a red fox? I mean is it against the law in any way? Anyone know how to care for one? Looking to buy a female and a male sometime in the future.

Caveat: This is from research, not personal experience.

So it doesn’t seem like there is any federal regulation regarding pet foxes, only state regulation where it could be considered an exotic pet. Most states, however, don’t even seem to bother with that, since they are native. Googling “fox breeders” even turns up a few directories of people who may have some for sale. Here’s one I found in Ohio:

The biggest considerations seem to be:

  • Foxes are not domesticated. They are wild animals that, while they may make good pets, will always be wild animals. They are not bred to live with humans.
  • They spray musky urine on pretty much everything in your house and are difficult to housebreak.
  • They can be highly destructive and should not be placed around anything you do not want bite marks in.
