What do you think about raising university fees?

I live in England at the moment and the news is filled with the rise of university fees. They are going to rise from around £3290 per year to up to £12,000. It actually makes me feel sick.

I do not come from a wealthy background and none of my family have previously gone to university. However, I have always succeeded at school and I want to make something out of myself. Why shouldn’t people like myself be given the opportunity to an education just because they can’t afford it? Luckily, I probably won’t be affected by this because I am going to university next September.

I know there are student loans etc but I dread to think of starting this world with thousands of pounds of debt. How is the government helping itself and its country? This is only going to widen the gap between the rich and poor.

I would love to hear some of your opinions?

I also would like to know what the system is like in the US?

Answer #2

it sucks. i know exactly what you mean, i dont have a wealthy family and im also the 1st to go to college and the tuition/fees are crazy. where i am going (im in my 3rd year) since ive been in college tuition has gone up $1000. so no im paying almost $13,000 each year on college. right now im about $30,000 in debt and im not done with school yet. and im paying for this all on my own with loans.

Answer #3

Wow. That is a crazy increase. It depends on what school you are going to in the U.S. If you’re going to a private school, you’re looking at between 25-50 grand a year. Public schools are a lot lower depending on the school and whether you are considered to be a local resident.

Answer #4

Are you talking about Universities? And is that dollars? Wow crazy amounts.

Answer #5

Yeah, universities. Private schools cost. My university was about $1,000 per credit. Semester was around $12,000, and then if you took summer classes it was $1,000 per credit.

I am very angry with Vince Cable right now. Especially after he signed a pledge that he would “strongly oppose fees being raised”

I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that I am going to have to pay all this money when I come to study my degree in 2012. I don’t see why we can’t be the same as countries which have free Universities such as: Scotland, Germany or Finland.

I do think I will be able to manage with the fee increase because I am fortunate but I doubt my friends will be able to cope very well. I am also hopeful my course will be quite reasonably priced as I want to do a degree with the NHS.

If only we could go back to the days of free University, David Cameron got it. I feel that this is the first of many new cuts which will widen the gap between rich and poor in the UK.

thats such a huge increase, thats horrible! Wow, that makes me feel bad for ever complaining about my uni fees. I pay about 6000 new zealand dollars each year which now seems really reasonable! I have a friend from Texas who is studying here, and even though she is paying international fees and had to pay for the flight over and everything, it still works out cheaper for her than if she had studied at home.

i think that will influence on the writing services
