How to raise a shitzu/poodle to not be jealous?

I have a shorky ( shitzu and yorkey) he is about 3 or 4 years old and we are bout to get a new dog, how can I teach both of my dogs to not be jealous. Also, what are some good house training tips? Thanks! (:

Your older dog will probably be a little jealous at first no matter what you do. Just be sure to spend some special time with him and pay him all the attention he would normally get. I would assume you are getting a puppy (as you are asking for house training tips) which will make it far easier. Dogs accept puppies much easier than another adult dog.

I find it easiest to skip paper training and start work imediately on getting the dog outside for his business. It means you have to wake up every 3-4 hours at night, but I have always found it far faster. Take the dog out every time they wake up, finish eating or are sniffing around, and when they do their business, praise them like crazy. When they make a mistake inside let them know they did wrong, but don’t over do it. Positive training gets better results that punishment. Its usually easiest to block off doorways so you can keep an eye on the puppy at all times. Usually wandering it to other rooms where you can’t see him is nothing but trouble.

Good luck with the new dog!

Dogs aren’t “jealous” in the way that humans are. What is appears to be jealousy…is actually resouce guarding, no different than if you were a favorite toy, or a bone. Just be sure to spend quality time with your older dog….alone….every day. The pup will be keeping you pretty busy, so you’ll have to schedule the older in.

Both dogs have to see YOU as the leader….and the pup needs you for protection….firm and fair….no squabbling or fighting….

On that tv show It’s Me Or The Dog I picked up some advice, such as: it’s a good idea to allow dogs to first meet someplace neutral… away from your house and yard, somewhere that the older dog doesn’t already view as its territory… Allow them to familiarize themselves with one another, sniff each others butts lol it’s their way of shaking hands. This may help with the initial defensiveness (jealousy) of the older dog.
