Quote from the Bible

In RE, we have these “Youth Bible” things. Basically simplified, but has the same meaning. So me and my friend were bored and read a section. It said something like

“If a man releases semen into a woman, they are both unclean, they must bathe and visit a preist, then burn a pigeon.” something like that anyway, I mean, wtf?!!

and another one

If a woman has discharge, she is unclean too?? Um, thats natural. sigh

hmmm, well there are lots of passages that need explaining…

Deuteronomy 25:11-12 (New International Version) 11 If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12 you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.

Deuteronomy 21:10-14 (King James Version) 10When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive, 11And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife; 12Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house, and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails; 13And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. 14And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.

Exodus 21: vs 2-6 ‘If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. amblessed… since you asked for specific quotes… I couldnt find the pigeon thing, but I did find the discharge bit (I’m assuming she’s talking about menstrual period?)

I am pointing out that you cannot simply choose to believe what you want to believe and interpret something the way you want to interpret something and then call it the infallible word of God… if there is a higher power who inspired a book, I highly doubt there would be a need for interpretation or argument…

Old testament. that whole “burn a pigeon” thing went out the window when jesus died on the cross. he was the ultimate sacrifice, and if you accept him into your heart and pray for forgiveness, you will be forgiven. however, pre-marital sex is still seen as wrong in God’s eyes. Not that I’m not guilty of a number of sins myself {{including that one}}…but no, you dont have to burn a pigeon or anything. it just means that you are “unclean” and need to pray for forgiveness, and try to live right by God.

oh I love it when people “read between the lines”, but then throw out Leviticus 18:22 (for those of you who have somehow escaped learning what it says: “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.”) as set it stone… so you’re going to interpret what you want how you want it, and some sins are forgiven some of the time, but if you’re gay you’re going to hell?

sometimes I go though the bible and find weirdo passages like this. you have to “read between the lines” and once you do, it makes sense. I’m not that great at it though. the old testament especially is very difficult at times.
