Prosumed consent for organ donation

I am against the prosumed consent for organ donation, what does everyone else think?

Answer #1

prEsumed consent…

Here’s how the system works now: An individual who wants to be an Organ Donor must “opt-in” - by signing a Donor Card, checking the box on their Driver’s License, or by signing up with a State Donor Registry. When a person dies in circumstances that might permit Organ Donation, someone from the local Organ Procurement Organization(OPO) approaches the family about Organ Donation. If their loved one had not discussed Organ Donation with them, they all too often decline to give consent. Sometimes they decline even when they know their loved one’s wish was to be a donor. Often, even in states that have “first person consent” laws, the family is allowed to override the individual’s wishes. Here’s how the system would work under Presumed Consent: An individual who does not want to be an Organ Donor would have to “opt-out” by entering their name on a National Registry maintained by OPTN - the same organization that now keeps the National Waiting List of transplant candidates. When a person died under circumstances that would permit Organ Donation, a search would be made of the Registry. If their name did not appear in the Registry, it would be presumed they had consented to be a Donor. While the family would be advised of this information, their consent would not be required, and no one would be allowed to override the donation.

Ah, I see now.

Well, I don’t think anyone should be “presumed” an organ donor.

The way it works here, is that if you choose to be a donor, you “opt-in” and it shows on your health card. If your health card doesn’t say “donor”, then you’re not a donor.

Answer #3

This one is tricky… I dont think a person should have to opt out… because that just causes all sorts of complications, not everyone is educated in what this stuff means… but I also do not believe your family should have any right to override your wishes…

Answer #4

oh let me add, I dont understand why you wouldnt want to be, I mean you’re dead… but people have religious beliefs and that has to be respected…

Answer #5

I can not understand anyone not wanting to be an organ donor. I agree with a presumed donor consent.

Answer #6

I am with you Utopia. What possible reason could anyone give for not wanting to be an organ donor? It isn’t like you are going to be using them anymore.

Answer #7

This is a new concept for me. Can you explain what it is, exactly?
