What are the pros and cons of going to an out-of-state public university?
The tuition is nearly double for an out-of-state student in most schools, but would it be worth it to go to a city you’ve always wanted to go to?
It would be worth it , but you would have to think about friends and family as well. And think if it’s what you really want.Just talk it out fully with family and stuff.
I’ve thought about this a lot. First of all it depends on who is paying the tuition, if it’s your parents then they may not be willing to pay double for tuition just so you can go to your favorite city. That’s where mine stand.
The pros- More freedom, you’re away from your family and old life, it would be sort of like a fresh start. -New experiences and places -Maybe even a better school, depends on where you live.
The cons- Travel time and cost, if you plan on seeing your family every once in a while - which I’m sure they would want you to do - you have to consider how much an airline ticket costs. Or gas, depending on your form of travel. -Homesickness, you wouldn’t know anyone in a different city.
- Lack of a support system, your family is your main support system. But it’s hard to be there for you from miles away.
The best solution I can think of is to study for the first one or two years in-state, and get a job, good grades. Then, depending on the degree you want, spend the last one or two (or more) in college out of state. You can take out student loans, and maybe get academic scholarships.
Also, it would be worthwhile to check out the study abroad programs at the schools you are considering. That would be just as good, if not better, as going to a school out-of-state.
Good luck :)
pros- you get to live away from family and start a new life in new surrounding cons- university’s of any kind have a higher tuition for people who don’t live in that state like by thousands of dollars
