How much does a professional piercer make in Australia?

Answer #1

It really depends on how the piercer is working- whether they are working on a fixed salary or ‘renting a chair’ at a tattoo/piercing parlor and making money off their own client base. If it was a fixed salary, and the piercing shop was middle class I’d guess around $17 auzzie dollars an hour. But I’m pretty sure most piercers rent a chair which means they have their area of the shop that they pay the owner to rent out, and work out of. In that case, they pay (for example) $300 a week, every week, and however much they make depends on how many clients they have that day. It will depend on how much they charge for each piercing, how well-known they are, the want for body modification in the area they work in, if the parlor has a good name etc etc. But I’d guess a piercer could do 4 piercings in an hour if they are really onto it, fast and efficient (without rushing). That could be roughly $40 a piercing which could mean $160 an hour. But remember they won’t be booked solid so they will have parts of each day with no clients. I’d guess a piercer makes roughly $160-$210 auzzie dollars a day. Provided they are, as I said, a middle class piercing parlor with a clean name in a town with a demand for piercings.

Oh and also, most piercers sell jewelry as well, and extra cleaning solution etc too so they will also (hopefully) make some extra money from display products. I’ve found that many piercers these days have websites to buy jewelry off, there is a huge demand for buying pierced jewelry offline these days and people love it when you can buy something locally so that postage is cheap.

Answer #3

I’m talking about Cosmetics Plus which hires a few piercers at a time and the jewellery comes with the piercing price not on top of it and they charge $25 a piercing. I just don’t know how much they’re paid for how many hours they work and if they get commission on top of that.

Answer #4

Oh and the place is pretty popular place considering it’s the only place in town to get a piercing without going to a tattoo or weed shop.

Answer #5

Okay, well in that case, you should go in and ask them. Say it’s for a research project or something.

Answer #6

I’ll try, thank you! :)

Answer #7

But remember all piercers will be paid differently and charge different amounts per piercing etc. There’s never a set salary/amount earned for piercers or tattoo artists, just like hairdressers and commission based workers.

Answer #8

They would pay rent per month for their chair just like hairdressers.

Answer #9

No they don’t. Only one piercer works per day in the place I mentioned I’ll be working at so they don’t rent their chair.
