Do you think its right for a country to control the population?

Do you think its right for a country to control the population? (dont think china, thats a bad example. This is assuming we could come up with a plan that would not cause the deaths of innocent children)

Answer #1

riona, exactly what part of the statement would you like backed up? that europe is lamenting it’s aging population, and the idea that immigration would be the solution

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/2053581.stm

that population growth is a developing world phenomenon

http://www.prb.org/Publications/Datasheets/2008/2008wpds.aspx

Nearly all of world population growth is now concentrated in the world’s poorer countries,” said Bill Butz, PRB’s president. “Even the small amount of overall growth in the wealthier nations will largely result from immigration.”

and population growth in the us , is mainly by immigration?

http://www.census.gov/population/www/pop-profile/natproj.html

does backing by the US government suffice?

Perhaps you need to read up more, just because you havent heard something, doesnt make it untrue…

I understand that christians believe that only christians will be left behind and only certain people make it to heaven and so on and so forth…but did those of you who believe that ever stop to think that maybe judges and states attorneys and so on are christians, yet they judge people daily…are they going to heaven? Hell no, they’re going to get there and gods going to tell them they shouldn’t have judged, seeing how innocent people go to jail and prison everyday. We can’t do population control, it’s not our right as humans. It’s not right, and again, who are we to play god? Although there are many people out there who shouldn’t reproduce…and do, and there are so many people out there not ready for children and giving birth daily, we can’t control that.

Answer #3

The problem lies not in the quantity of humanbeings but their quality. I can live with 5 educated and respectable people in the same apartment, but I can’t stand living with 2 idiots in a wider apartment.

The Earth can and must tolerate us being so many, but it can’t and doesn’t tolerate us being so stupid.

Riona, I do not agree with you. We, humanbeings, are the best feature in the universe. Just ‘cause we are a bit too greedy does not make monsters out of us. The good in us will never vanish.

Without us, the universe might seem cooler, but it would be useless, and trust me, it’s usefulness that make the universe pretty.

What’s the sea when nobody is there to admire it?

No, the state does not have the right to control population. You can’t tell someone not to be born. It’s beyond anyone’s capacity to take such a decision.

You exist ‘cause God created you, not ‘cause the government excluded you from the birth control plan.

I predict that 100 years from now, our great great grandchildren will be lamenting population loss - this is already happening in Europe.

Population growth at this time in history is a developing world phenomenon that will end once the planet is educated and industrialized. The population in the US would be declining at present if not for immigration.

Answer #5

Shudnt really bother cus if your a christian, you know that the rapture is soon and th earth will be wiped out leaving the non christians behind

They have been saying this for roughly 2000 years, but then again maybe that is an idea. Then the world WON’T be overpopulated anymore…

Answer #6

Utopia- First of all, I don’t believe I said that it meant no one reproduces. Second, it obviously didn’t last long considering it’s now worse than ever. Correct me if I’m wrong?

Answer #7

Toadaly- Do you have anything to back your statement up? I’ve never heard anything that would make me believe that, I’m interested in what makes you think that.

Answer #8

Shudnt really bother cus if your a christian, you know that the rapture is soon and th earth will be wiped out leaving the non christians behind

(only 20% christians will make it to heaven)

Answer #9

I support zero population growth. Most future problems that we will face will be brought about by rampant overpopulation. I do not believe that anyone able should reproduce. I do not want to see this as policy but believe it deserves promotion.

Answer #10

riona- the explanation was not meant for your eyes only. Many are under the misconception that ZPG = no birth. When this country began the shift in the late 70s to the conservative/fundamentalist christian leaning, population control became unpopular. Anything that the more conservative could define as perhaps including the possibility of abortions, was thrown on the fire. With each conservative administration and pandering to the fundamentalists…ZPG became more and more ‘liberal’ and ‘leftist’. We have entered a new age and hopefully a more progressive political administration that will again embrace the more intelligent ideals.

Answer #11

haha thanks bmcoyle, most people prefer to refer to me as a “nerd” though. And utopia, the problem with deciding not to have children for the sake of the planet is that only the intelligent people (if we could still save the earth) would go through with it, resulting in reverse evolution. Considering the state of the human race as it is, that would just speed up our inevitable demise. It is true, however, that most of our problems will stem from overpopulation.

Answer #12

your right, it probably wouldnt work, and it would be nearly impossible to convince enough people that it was the right way to go. I believe that we’ve destroyed the earth to such a point that we cant stop it and we cant survive it. This might sound kind of cruel, but I think the universe is better off without the human race anyway. Not that I want everyone to die, its just we’ll keep creating problems as long as we exist.

Answer #13

nobliano- Ummm thats not really what we mean. Its not like you can just tell the earth to suck it up and deal with it, the earth cant support this many people no matter what you, as you seem to think, tell it. Also, how in the world do you know that we are the best feature in this universe?! You have no idea what amazing things are out there!!! And your not telling someone not to be born, your telling people not to be irrisponsible. One good thing came of your comment however, you helped prove my point about reverse evolution.

Answer #14

riona- I must respectfully disagree. Zero population growth was a popular attitude and social awareness supported during (but not limited to) the sixties and early seventies. It gained popularity on the heels of the baby boom of the 50s. It was not popular to rampantly reproduce. Also, zero population growth does not mean that no one reproduces…it is when the birth rate and the death rate are even.
