pit bull had 10 puppies 1 is left out

my pit bull just had 10 puppies and I noticed 1 of the puppies is being left out. we found it off to the side in some blankets, then we moved it to mommy. then later when I checked on her again all the puppies were asleep in the crate, and momy and that same puppy was by itself with mommy nursing. is something wrong with it?? or is mommy not want the 10th puppy??

hmmm…

you need to make sure this little one is being able to nurse. perhaps its the runt and the mom has decided it is not worth the effort to raise it. might sound harsh, but sometimes nature is really tough. I suggest getting a bottle of puppy formula and get ready to bottle feed it on your own.

make sure the little guy is played with…I suggest taking another one of the puppies, maybe two and keep all three of them together, separated from the rest, so the little one doesn’t feel left out, then rotate its siblings so it gets to know all of them by sight and smell. you might also want to take the puppy in question to the vet and make sure there’s nothing wrong.

good luck and congrats on the puppies. let me know if you need help

There maybe several factors. If the puppy is nursing I would not worry. Mom is just rotating the puppies. I have a poodle that only has 2 or 3 puppies a litter and she does her puppies like chicks. She will have one in with her and two out and two out and one in. I am not sure it she does that because she is monitoring the feedings or the temp or both but the puppies do well and she is a good mom so I let her do he thing.

If the pup was not nursing and left out and cold I would look for a cleft in the throat or something like that going on. But you say she is nursing the puppy. It may just be a stronger puppy. Or you may discover later that the puppy is actually different pups and she is rotating the pup that is the odd man out. That is a big litter.

I would be ready to supplement with a bottle and some formula every other feeding and your Mom may need a Tums once a day. It gives calcium.

I also cook calf or beef liver for my Moms and feed them about a half cup a day for a litter that size. Each puppy tore away and left a sore that is bleeding inside so she is going to have a lot of bleeding (a mom with two pups with have very little, only two sores) The liver (chicken livers work too, whatever is cheaper) and feed her that for about two weeks with her puppy chow. I hope you put her on a puppy chow? She needs the calcium from that too. Just cut it up and hand feed it to her, she will love it.

Hope these tips work.

Sometime the mother knows there is something wrong with the pup and leaves it alone, we had a mother cat leave her kitten and we took it in and it was sick with worms and cold, she came back two days later to eat and then left and never came back…You need to take it to the vet to have it checked out and then start bottle feeding it so it will be healthy. If it is the runt of the litter sometimes they have the hardest time making it as they are timid and won’t force their way to feed from the mother…take it to the vet…

Answer #4

Is it the runt of the liter? Is it physically able to latch on and nurse? If not, you may need to suppliment with a bottle, but try to get it to latch on to the mom …10 pups ia a lot for momma to care for, but she should be producing enough for 10… Does the momma dog take care of it otherwise, lick it ect? If she is accepting of it otherwise, make sure its not a physical issue with the puppy that he may not be able to latch on to nuirse…he will die quyick at this tender stage if he doesnt stay warm and get the milk he needs…call a vet asap if you have any questions..most vets have emergency lines available after hrs and on holidays…

5-10 pups is a normal litter for pit bulls. The mother may not have enough nipples to nurse all 10 pups at once; I’ve seen some females have 8 while others have more. As long as he’s nursing at some point, you shouldn’t be too concerned. It is possible to bottle feed pups but I strongly suggest watching it to make sure it’s gaining weight and feeding from the mother.

If there is something wrong with the pup you should find out in the check-up with your vet that SHOULD be coming up.
