Were there any pirates in the 19th century?

I am sure there where, as long as there have been boats on the high sea there have been pirates. All a pirate is, is a thieve on the ocean and this is still very popular today. Their is always someone out there who wants what you have.

Answer #4

There are still pirates even to this day … they’ve changed with the times and carry rifles as opposed to sabres, but the coast guard has their work cut out for them.

Answer #5

Your right and there is nothing good about them except in jimmy buffett songs. Hats off to the coast guard, but sometimes it’s too late for them, all “honest” vessels should be heavily armed to defend themselves, and what a good deterent that would be

Good song.

Actually, there were a lot of pirates, buccaneers, privateers and corsairs in the time between the 1680ies and the 1750ies. That was the boom time of piracy. And that is also the the time that most romantic pirate stories are about.

But there have always been some pirates, before and after that time. The Vikings were basically pirates, too.

The 19th century was not ideal for piracy, as the richest of ships were the new steam liners. And these were often faster and way larger than the older sailing ships. Also, with the more modern telegraphy and messaging systems, you couldn’t just rob a ship, go to the next harbor and claim it’s yours.

Piracy has been increasing since the 1980ies in some regions of the world. Though modern pirates hardly ever steal the goods from the ship. They will more often take hostages and demand several million dollars ransom money from their employer or state. The most endangered places to be attacked by modern pirates are the strait of Malaga and the coast of Somalia.

Well, I guess that - at least in the case of Somalian pirates - the world is suffering a problem they caused themselves.

There were honest fishermen in Somalia. Many of those. They weren’t rich, but they could make a living of it. So they were contented as poor, hard-working people often are. Then the World came in and destroyed their subsistence. As Somalia sunk into the chaos of a civil war in the 1980ies and 1990ies, large fish trailers came to illegally catch every fish in their waters. And they had no one who supported their rights. Then, some ruthless folks dumped toxic waste in their seas. So there was no way for them to go on living the old way. Then people noticed that the rich ships that carried goods in front of their coast - goods they never could afford - sailed under the same flags as the ships that destroyed what was left of their economy. So a handful of them decided to buy a Kalashnikov and become a pirate. Since then, random piracy by single, desperate ex-fishermen has turned into organized piracy by mafia-like organizations. And a lot of people profit from it who never were desperate ex-fishermen. Yet, it’s basically another round of “you get what you give”. http://funadvice.com/r/bij1db1eej0
