Why do I always picture myself as a male when I think of my future?

(I’m 14) Whenever I think of my self as an adult, I want to be a vet, I always think of myself as a male (I’m a female) and I have to remind myself that I am a female. Am I gay or something?

Answer #1

That doesnt make you gay, a gay person is when you are only attracted to the same gender as yourself. What your describing is something thats not uncommen. Its possible that it may just be a phase your going through, or its possible it could turn into a long struggle and journey. Feeling like you were meant to be the opposite gender…is also called a transgendered person once they start going through the transformation. I suggest you do some extensive research on it because there is alot involved.

Answer #2

Do you mean I am Literally turning into a guy??

All I know is I am not incredibly girly and feel like I would make a better male in the future. But when I think about myself in the future, I do not actually mean to think of myself as a male. I just automatically do until I remind myself I’m a female and then I just cannot picture myself-especially not as a vet, I always think, “I can’t wait to be an uncle, but then I remember I’ll never be one and I have to erase the picture from my head.

I’m either going insane… or turning into a guy???

Answer #3

btw, by future I mean as an adult-I’m only 14 :p

Answer #4

You dont just turn into a guy - thats physically impossible. You are either starting to see yourself as a transgendered person, or its possible that you may be associating being a man with havin success and being a better person for some reason. Only a therapist can help you ort through this though.

Answer #5

Are you sure it’s that serious? I don’t think my mum would send me to therapy if I told her. Is there anything I can do without getting therapy?

Answer #6

You need to not freak out. You’re not going crazy. What you’ve described could be transgenderism or maybe not, it doesnt sound like it exactly, but it could be. There are people you can talk to. If you just do a search for transgender help, you can see what other transgender people have to say. If you can identify with that, maybe it is your projection of gender roles. These are really complicated issues. I dont want you to freak out. This could be something temporary you’re just struggling with for now, or it could be something more long term. Either way, there are no answers overnight. If things are not resolved and you’re still confused, you should consider talking to a therapist. If you dont feel comfortable sharing with your mother, tell her you’re going through a tough time and want to talk to someone. You dont have to share details. http://funadvice.com/r/3kbbtl9i8p
