What is done at a phycologist appoiment when they are traying to figure out if you have depression?

So I have an appoiment to go tommorow, and I really don’t want to go. Because I know for a fact that I am not depressed, but it was court ordered and I have to go. I’m all scared to go now because My antie told me that It was just talking and then my dad said they would put me to sleep or something. I don’t know which one to believe at all, so what exacly do they do at a phycologist when they are traying to diagnose you with something?

They try to find out about your circumstances: family background, finances, employment (or lack of) etc., and various health issues e.g. how are you sleeping, eating, etc., are you taking any medication or any other drügs (including alcohol), ….. and make an assessment of your state of mind from that background and the manner in which you respond to various questions e.g. how you think you are coping with any difficulties you perceive yourself to be having.

Lol! To sleep? Uhm anyways, a basic intake includes talking about what you’re doing there, your family, school, social network (friends, partner, any one important in your life), your physical health in very short, the basic mental health questions (eating, sleeping, any sort of obsessions, compulsions, tiredness, difficulty concentrating, seeing or hearing things that arent there, bursts of energy, anger, anxiety etc), any sort of legal issues, suicida.lity, substance abuse, has anyone ever hurt you in any way or is anyone currently hurting you, etc. Here’s the thing. Instead of looking at this as someone who is trying to figure out what is wrong with you, maybe you could just look at this as someone who you can talk to without judgement. It’s really not a big deal. There may be other assessments, so like activities (drawing a picture, etc). I doubt it, I’ve never seen it done in a mental health assessment for court, but just in case it does come up you wont be surprised. And listen, try to be as honest as possible, they tend to be overly cautious and they can tell when you’re holding stuff back. When you hold stuff back they tend to think somethings wrong and then they recommend therapy just in case. Remember, if nothing’s wrong, then you dont have to lie right? Remember, no one lives a perfect life. No one is happy 24/7. So if you try to pass off as living in a perfect world, they will know something’s up. Just be you. If you really dont have anything going on, that’s what it will say. And if you could benefit with talking to someone, what’s the big deal? You’ll just have someone on your side who sits and listens… That’s it.

Thats the thing, what more can they do about it other than putting me in theraphy? I’m alredy in theraphy.

Answer #4

Hmm. They could refer you for a psychiatric evaluation I suppose? Or family therapy? It’s not a substance abuse eval, so it probably wouldn’t recommend treatment for that (I guess it could recommend an evaluation). I dunno why they’re doing the assessment if you’re already in therapy. I just assumed you weren’t since you asked this question. It wont be too different from therapy, except just more questions than usual.
