Why don't people believe in spanking their children anymore?

it seems sooooo many kids are out of control now-a-days and it’s somethin that can be fixed with just a lick of the belt. Why are people becoming so soft with their kids?

It’s a long story but they are afraid of getting in trouble. Now, child abuse is one thing (that I would never condone) but discipline is entirely different and necessary sometimes. Kids are controling lots of parents and teachers nowadays and it is only teaching them how to manipulate and get their way. I remember as about a 3rd grader a teacher telling me to stop shooting paper wads. When I ignored her and kept doing it, I got taken out into the hall and paddled. I never did it again and they didn’t have to put me on ritalin either which is another crying shame that is being done to children “drugging” them to make them behave.

Kids love to threaten there parents by calling the cops now these days.

I don’t believe it’s humane at all to inflict pain on a person who is smaller and weaker than you are. I think it is sadistic, and a way of training someone through fear. There are plenty of ways to punish a child and teach them values. Why does it have to involve physical pain (or emotional abuse, for that matter)?

If hurting children is really beneficial, I would imagine that most incarcerated adults have not been spanked, and most people without criminal records, HAVE been spanked but something tells me that’s not the case.

in some states its against the law and can get turned into child services

A spanking and a beating are two totally different things. One is humane while the other is not at all and wrong. A swat with the hand on the behind of a small child to keep them from dragging items from the grocery store shelves and throwing them accross the floor like toys is discipline. Children should behave in the store, and when we get home we will play catch or dolls or bake some cookies whatever the case may be. I hold the door open for elderly people with walkers, cains, and wheelchairs to this day while so many teenagers now just cut in front of them and laugh because they were never taught to respect when they were small. “Talking” can work, but when it doesen’t, let me put it this way: If we all had a father like Andy Griffith, the world would be a better place.

I agree with onemandog,,,there is a big difference between a corrective swat on the butt for a child who doesn’t accept the verbal corrections. I’ve watched parents who in trying to discipline their children verbally, get kicked, punched, and even slapped in the face by the child, and they are still trying to reason with them.. Or the child who flat out tells them, there’s nothing you can do about it. because I’ll tell them you hit me and you’ll be arrested. If the alternative methods work then why are so many kids more cruel/violent/suicidal today then they ever were in prior generations ? Kids used to settle their differences with fists…today they try to kill them and don’t have a problem with taking out half the school in the process.

Spanking a child is not against the law. Though I do know that in GA, FL, and AL the law states that if you leave a mark on your child that lasts for an hour or more THEN it is considered child abuse (which can and should be reported.) Personally I dont feel that its wrong to spank a child, but I do think it should be a last resort after time out, loss of privledges, or other reasonable ways of teaching. With my son I start with time out, but he only gets 2 strikes, 3rd time around and he’s getting whooping.
